A-level students must be encouraged to use their private study sessions in school wisely. No time to lose. As I told one sixth firmer on Friday, it might be worth forgoing his 10 hours with a part-time 'zero hours contract' employer to concentrate over the next 8-10 weeks on getting the grades he needs to enter the law profession.It's up to the individual at the end of the day. Free will and all that. However, there comes a time in everybody's life when one must weigh up what's important. Now is one of those times.

Half term hols. Time to use the time for revision. This holiday time should mimick school hours for Y11 students i.e 5 - 6 hours study each day spread all subjects. This is not a time for students to kick back and relax completely. Studying must continue.

It's good that older, more experienced teachers are being used as mentors to guide the younger, inexperienced entrants to the profession, but too often the sage criticisms of top-down leadership and quick fix systems made by older, experienced teachers are dismissed as the rumblings of expensive curmudgeons. Let us not forget the African saying: everytime an old person dies, a library burns.
