What does 4 × 5 actually look like? 🧮

Give a learner 20 counters and ask them to make four groups of five. Then explore the same calculation on the Flexitable multiplication grid, folding it along the lines for 4 and 5 to reveal 20.

The counters show the groups. The grid connects those groups to the numbers.

Try these questions together:
- Where can you see the four groups of five?
- What happens if we rearrange them into five groups of four?
- How could we use the same counters to explain 20 ÷ 4 = 5?

Give the learner time to move the counters, fold the grid and explain their thinking. It’s a practical way to explore the relationship between multiplication and division, alongside clear teaching.

One of the things I value about a practical maths resource is the conversation it can start. A learner can point, move, fold and explain, giving us an opportunity to explore their thinking together.

During Dyslexia Awareness Week, I want to encourage teachers and parents to make more space for that kind of learning. Remembering a multiplication fact, reading a word problem and understanding a mathematical relationship are different parts of the task. Giving a learner another way to explore the idea can provide a useful starting point.

Take 4 × 5 as an example. Put out four groups of five counters, count the total together and write the calculation alongside them. Then rearrange those same counters into five groups of four.

You now have several useful questions to explore:

What changed when we rearranged the counters?
Why is the total still 20?
Where can we see the four and the five?
How could we use this to explore division?
The important part is connecting what the learner can see and handle with the calculation on the page. Give them time to explain, try another arrangement and explore the relationship between the numbers.

🐸 These naughty frogs were hopping all over the 1 - 100 grid today! 🐸

My young tutee's mission? To track them down and work out which numbers they'd landed on. 🐸🔢 A fun way to practise number recognition, counting and problem-solving while keeping learning playful!
