Hello! Life has been particularly busy over the last few months, with one thing and another, so the social media posts have been few and far between. I wanted to re-introduce myself to any new followers and warmly welcome you to my page(s)!

The summer holidays are a blessing and a curse for me - I feel very lucky to have the time off, but I do find it hard to fill all of the time with exciting (and affordable!) things to keep my daughter from watching the Paw Patrol Mighty Movie for the seventeenth time 🫣

I have been enjoying the heat, but it made me think about how uncomfortable being pregnant in summer can be. My ankles seemed to double in size on warmer days, so you have my sympathy if this has been your experience too! Elevate those feet and get someone fetching you cool compresses and drinks 🤰

🩷 Running a business is bloody hard work and I have the greatest respect for all the parents, particularly mothers, out there who run a successful business - you are immense!

The most recent stats from March 2025 for Friarage Maternity Centre - our local Midwife Led Unit (MLU).

❓What is a Midwife Led Unit?

🚺MLUs are designed to support women in having a physiological birth, minimising interventions unless medically necessary.

🚺Midwives are the primary caregivers, providing comprehensive care throughout pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period. It is highly unlikely that there will be a consultant or doctor present/available.

🚺MLUs often have a more relaxed and homely atmosphere than traditional hospital labour wards, with features like private rooms, birthing pools, and comfortable furniture.

🚺MLUs are often located near or within a hospital setting, allowing for easy transfer to a consultant-led unit if special circumstances arise.

When I tell friends, colleagues and acquaintances that I am a Hypnobirthing instructor, they often look at me like I've sprouted a second head. Then they often ask 'why?!'...

So here's a brief insight into the 'why' 🩷

Considering a home birth?

A recent study conducted in Spain found that home births, assisted by a trained midwife were associated with higher rates of spontaneous birth, lower medical intervention (epidurals, instrumental deliveries), and more freedom of movement and birthing positions.

Some key findings from the data:
🩷Women who planned home births had significantly lower rates of episiotomy (2.1%) compared to those who planned hospital births (31%)
🩷 Neonates from planned home births had a lower ICU admission rate (1.1%) compared to hospital births (2.8%)
🩷Spontaneous vaginal birth was more common in planned home births (92.7%) compared to planned hospital births (83%)
🩷 Only 6.7% of home birth women gave birth in the lithotomy position (lying on their back with legs in stirrups) compared to 62.2% in hospitals
