My student today absolutely smashed her session! 😁
We have been reading this book together a few times now and today she read a lot more confidently and was able to read more words by sight 🙌🏼
She also wanted to take some year 1 words home with her to practice before her next session! What a little superstar! 🌟

A fab session in the reading hub today 😊
Year 1 CEW Snakes and Ladders, followed by reading a new story by Julia Donaldson, learning the difference between Mr and Mrs and learning to sight read some 'tricky' words i.e. could and would. The student did really well! 😊

In one of my reading sessions, we are going to be reading The Wizard of Oz.

We've looked at the characters and new words within the books...one of which was tornado. We talked about what we knew of tornadoes, and then learnt how the story is set in Kansas, a place notorious for tornadoes.

We then looked at the book cover and made predictions about what we think might happen in the story. The student predicts that either "that big cloud of smoke is a tornado, and the people are walking towards it, which is very silly and dangerous", or, "there's a big dangerous tornado and they're walking to the building to escape as it's the safest building ever."

I can't wait to read this story with the student!

In another session yesterday, we played some memory games using our year 1 CEWs, to help the student to retain what the words look like, enabling them to be able to read them by sight ☺️

In one of today's sessions we learnt how to use a dictionary, using our knowledge of alphabetic placement to help us locate words easier. We also learnt how to use the words at the top of the page to find out if we're near to the word we're looking for.

Then we used our dictionary skills in a game of snakes and ladders. When we landed on a question mark we had to pick out a word, read it out loud and either say the meaning, if we knew it, or use the dictionary to find the meaning. If correct, we got to move forward an extra space (or not if a snake was on the next square!).

The student did amazing at this, and as this was their first time using a proper dictionary, did really well picking up the skills to use it! She's even going to practice at home! ☺️

Our sound this month is 'ng'.
We have been locating the sound in our stories and adding the words to our list - which we will practice saying in our other sessions ☺️
