Over the last couple of weeks in the Puffins we have been reading Goldilocks and The Three Bears. We asked the children to bring in their teddies from home.
We all gathered round the firepit; making sure we were remembering how to stay safe around the fire.

Katie who was leading the experience asked you all what we needed to start our fire and some of you shouted: "WAFFLE". This a grid of six sticks we use as the basis of our fire and is something children create alongside an adult at the start of a fire.
Katie then asked you all to start pulling clouds down from the sky as our next part of the fire! This references the fact that we use balls of cotton wool to help get the fire going. This part of the fire is usually combined with children stretching hands up to the clouds, imitating reaching for the clouds!
Katie asked you what shape we needed to finish our fire and you all shouted with excitement: "TRIANGLE!" At this stage we lean sticks against one another to create a triangular structure before continuing to light it.

Once our fire was ready we set it alight and then placed our big pot of porridge on to heat up. We let our porridge cool till it was 'just right', similar to baby bears.
We then all sat with our teddies and read Goldilocks with our porridge!

Well done Katie and well done the Puffins!

Over the next few months we're going to be introducing and sharing some pictures of our staff team in action!

Our Puffins team is made up of a wonderful group of adults who look after our children who are aged between two and three.

The Puffins is led by Sayoko and Murray, both of whom are qualified Early Years Practitioners. Sayoko has been with the service for more than five years now and has recently been promoted to Senior Practitioner. Additionally, Murray holds a HND in Childhood Practice, is a qualified Froebelian and has recently qualified in Introducing Woodwork in Early Childhood Education.

Abbey is the further qualified Practitioner in the Puffins and can be seen here adventuring with our Puffins in the local community!

Katie and Lesley are our Practitioners in Training and complete the core of our Puffins team. Lesley enjoys being part of the journey of children developing and contributing to this by building resilience whilst being outside in all seasons. Katie loves spending time with our children in general and having the opportunity to make an impact on their lives!

And there we have it, the Puffins team! We look forward to introducing the rest of our teams soon!

Celebrating 14 Years of Fenton Barns Nursery!

This day marks a very special milestone as Fenton Barns Nursery celebrates 14 wonderful years.

Since opening our doors in 2012, we have had the pleasure of welcoming so many wonderful children and families into our nursery family here in beautiful East Lothian.

Over the years, our nursery has been filled with laughter, learning, friendships, muddy adventures, creativity and countless precious memories. From those first little faces who joined us in 2012 to the children enjoying nursery with us today, every child has played a special part in our story.

A huge thank you to all the families who have trusted us with their little ones, to all the children who have made our days so special, and to our amazing team who bring warmth, care and enthusiasm to the nursery every day.

We are so proud of everything we have built together and feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a wonderful community.

Here’s to 14 years of growing, learning, playing and making memories and to all the exciting adventures still to come.

Feel free to share any of your memories over the last 14 years with us!

✨ Mini French lessons with Vero are back! ✨

The children at Fenton Barns have been learning French through songs and stories.
It’s wonderful to see the children joining in, learning new words and building confidence as they discover a new language.

We believe introducing languages from an early age is such a lovely way to encourage curiosity, communication and an appreciation of different cultures.

C’est magnifique! 🌿

💧🌈 Splish, Splash, Explore! 🌈💧

Our Little Robins have been busy experimenting with water using our guttering wall! They poured water into the different channels and watched it travel along the guttering before collecting in the big tub below. 🪣💦

There was lots of exploring, problem solving and teamwork as the children discovered how the water moved and how quickly they could fill the tub.

A simple setup creating lots of opportunities for learning through play! 💙

The wonder of woodwork and the wonder of childhood!

This morning we introduced woodwork to our children in the Owls! We started by discussing the space and having a look at the resources available before getting hands on with our tools. Today we practiced clamping, sawing, hammering, screwing and drilling. This was an experience that involved real tools and real materials which allowed children to engage for a prolonged period of time. We saw children utilise fine and gross motor skills, risk assessment, comprehension of instructions and a huge amount of problem solving came about as we considered which tool wood be best to attach the variety of available of items to the wood. This was a morning of learning through doing with a smile!
