It’s a common misconception that outrigger spreader pads are only needed on visibly soft or waterlogged ground. The surface may appear firm, but what lies underneath can significantly affect stability.
Hidden voids, loose fill, uncompacted aggregate and changes in ground condition can all influence how outrigger loads are transferred.
Before setting up a spider lift or other MEWP using outriggers:
✅ Assess the ground conditions
✅ Check for underground services, voids or weak areas
✅ Use suitable spreader pads where required
✅ Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for setup and loading
✅ Reassess conditions if the ground or weather changes
A stable setup starts from the ground up.
Never assume that a dry-looking surface is automatically capable of supporting the load.
