Year 5 and 6 DT: Designing Doodlers

Yesterday, Year 5 and 6 put their creativity and engineering skills to the test by designing and making their own Doodlers in Design and Technology. Using a motor, a simple electrical circuit and an off-centre weight, the children created wobbling drawing machines that produced unique patterns and artwork. It was fantastic to see them applying their understanding of circuits, mechanisms and design as they experimented with different ideas to make their doodlers move and draw in exciting ways. A fun and engaging day of hands-on learning!

Yesterday Years 5 and 6 enjoyed an exciting visit from author Chris Stevens, who shared insights into his book The Pirate Queen and the Half-Plucked Chicken.

He spoke about what inspires his writing and entertained the children with stories from his own life, explaining how real experiences can influence characters and ideas in books.

The visit was engaging, inspiring and encouraged the children to think creatively about their own writing.

Yesterday Year 1 had a lovely live lesson with children’s author John Hegley and illustrator Neal Layton, linked to their new book Stanley’s Stick.

The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story, hearing about the creative process, and taking part in the session. We are looking forward to using the book as inspiration for our next writing learning journey after half term!

Year 4 had a fantastic visit from children’s author Kieran Larwood yesterday! He spoke to the children about his journey to becoming a writer and answered lots of questions. The children also learned how to create detailed maps for adventure stories, helping to bring their own imaginative worlds to life.

🏓 Yesterday was our final Pickleball Club session for this term at Ventnor Cricket Club!

Over the term, 15 children took part in the fully funded sessions, learning all the skills and rules needed to play pickleball. It has been fantastic to watch their confidence grow while having fun, staying active, and working together as a team.

Everyone had a wonderful time, and we’re so proud of all the children for their enthusiasm and effort throughout the club! 👏🎉

On Friday 15th May, Year 2 visited Carisbrooke Castle as part of our History work. We learnt about the different people who would have lived in the castle and thought about how important their roles were. We now know why the donkeys are so important — they helped work the wheel so the castle always had fresh water — and why their names begin with J, which links to King Charles I’s secret signature when he was a prisoner there.

Bravely, we climbed the castle walls and imagined what it would have been like to spot an enemy approaching in the distance. Year 2 are now true castle experts!
