Last week, our students welcomed Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub CGC / MAWW Fire and Rescue for important talks on fire safety in the home.

Students learned about reducing the risk of fires, the importance of working smoke alarms, and the practical steps we can all take to keep ourselves and our families safe.

A huge thank you to the team for taking the time to visit and share such important, potentially life-saving advice with our students! 👏

A huge thank you to all the organisations that attended our Events and Clubs Fair alongside the Meet the Tutor Evening and helped make the event such a success.

We were delighted to welcome representatives from Young Farmers, Air Ambulance, Youth Justice, Silver Band, CREDU, Air Cadets, Police Cadets, Family Liaison, Feathers Charity Youth Club, Youth Intervention Service and Beth Clewes our local Youth Art Support Worker.

Their time, expertise, and commitment to supporting young people provided valuable opportunities and information for students and families alike.

We were also honoured to be joined by the Mayor Cllr Lewington, whose attendance helped make the evening even more special.

Changes to Free School Meals for some families who have children in Years 7 and 8 in Secondary School from September 2026

The Welsh Government has announced plans to expand eligibility for Free School Meals (FSM) for families in receipt of Universal Credit from September 2026, starting with children in years 7 & 8. These will be known as expanded free school meals (expanded FSM).

What does this mean for Powys families?

Families receiving Universal Credit will be able to apply from 14 September 2026.

Families will be able to apply through the current Free School Meals application process here

https://en.powys.gov.uk/article/11906/Free-school-meals
Once your application has been received and checked for eligibility, you will receive a letter notifying you of the outcome.

If your child is able to access expanded FSM through the scheme, you will be able to access a free meal from the date of the award. This will remain in place for the remainder of the academic year. You will then need to apply for your child to receive meals in the following academic year if you are still in receipt of Universal Credit.

This morning, we welcomed pupils from Ysgol Calon y Dderwen for their transition session with Beyond Breakout.

Working in teams, learners tackled a series of interactive challenges, using tablets and problem-solving skills to uncover clues, complete tasks and work their way through the breakout experience whilst learning their way around the school site.

A special mention goes to our older student leaders, who provided support and encouragement throughout the session. They did a fantastic job helping younger learners develop their confidence, collaborate effectively and overcome the challenges together.

Don’t just take our word for it! Hear directly from the pupils in today’s video testimonials about what they enjoyed most from the session.

A huge well done to everyone who took part and embraced the challenge! 🔍

Last week, our Sixth Form students took part in their induction activities, including an Escape Room exploring Newtown organised by Beyond Breakout!

Students worked together to solve puzzles, crack codes and beat the clock, a brilliant way to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while getting to know each other.

A great start to the new academic year!
