NCW 2024 - DEHS Career Stories
When Lesley left school after S6 in 1999, she went to university, studying to become a Pharmaceutical Scientist. Upon leaving university, Lesley secured a job in a lab after gaining an insight into working in a lab during an industrial placement with GSK as part of her degree. Lesley went travelling and on returning to the UK secured a job back with the same company, working there for another 3 years. Due to the nature of research, some pharmaceutical companies were closing sites. Lesley took up tutoring whilst working and really enjoyed working with young people. This led her to apply and become a teacher. Lesley is now a Chemistry teacher in our own Science Department here at DEHS!
Lesley’s advice:
“Don't be scared to give it a shot. If your course has access to placements - go for it as these give a good insight into the real working life. I enjoyed the lab working but was naive to the promotion routes being limited by not having a PhD. All your part time jobs give you invaluable transferable skills. It’s better to regret things you did do than didn't do!”

Today was the day! The DEHS Physicists descended on CERN! We had a great day exploring the Science Gateway Exhibitions. We also got to meet Dr Farmer who works as a Theoretical Physicist at the facility and is a friend of Miss Welsh’s from university. We felt very privileged he was able to take time to meet us and talk a bit about what he does and how his career brought him here.
We also very much enjoyed the gift shop!

This week we have worked together to raise awareness to all about the 27th January: Holocaust Memorial Day. Pupils have learned about why we commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, to not only remember those who were lost in concentration camps, but those who are still lost because of genocides happening today.
The Holocaust Memorial Trust has a theme each year, this year it focuses on the fragility of freedom. The pupils were asked to draw a candle in memory of all who have been lost and write on it what freedom means to them. You can see some amazing examples in the pictures! The pupils were amazed by the information and stories that they learned about and have put a fantastic effort into creating this display, which is going to be placed in the foyer of the school.
To join in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day there are many things you can do; light a candle, read about survivor stories, discuss and talk about the day to others and so much more. You can find out more information about this day on the Holocaust Memorial Trust website.

S3 pupils had the opportunity to make Lamb Keema for St Andrews day thanks to The Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers Scotland along with Quality Meat Scotland. Pupils enjoyed the opportunity to cook with lamb and many enjoyed eating their Lamb Keema before leaving.

On Monday we hosted Stranraer Academy for the second time this term. This time it was our senior team who faced the challenge. The girls played brilliantly and won both games with an impressive score line. Players of the matches were Charley Service and Megan McIlwraith, well done girls!
DEHS vs Stranraer Academy A: 53-19
DEHS vs Stranraer Academy B: 60-7
The senior team finish the league undefeated and will now progress to the regional finals at the end of March. We wish the girls the best of luck at the finals!
