S5 RURAL SKILLS

A visit today to High Airyolland farm, hosted by Neale & Janet McQuistin, the group had the opportunity to be introduced to the farm, and sample a little taste of the Kitchen Coos & Ewes experience. A mixed enterprise business, with tourism, pedigree Beltex sheep, Highland Coos, & wind turbines, it is the epitome of a diversified farming operation. Lots of ideas to guide the development of our Business Investigations. We’re already looking forward to our return.

S4 - Drystane Dyking

We visited Airyolland this afternoon, ti meet with Neale McQuistin. A self confessed farmer ‘who can do a bit of dyking’ we began to develop our basic skills in dyking. We learnt the need to lay out and bunch stones according to size shape, and the importance of infilling. A once large hole in the d**e was repaired and was barely a hint of the former breach.

S4 Rural Skills: Over the past 6 weeks we’ve been propagating a variety of different vegetables from seed, facing the challenges of the drier weather, and potting them on in preparation for planting into the new community garden. We delivered them this afternoon to their new home - the community garden space near the old West Pier. A project created by the Dandelion project.
