Today is a day to celebrate the dads, stepdads, grandads and father figures who show up, stand beside us, guide us, support us and love us.

Fatherhood isn't defined by biology alone. It's found in the quiet sacrifices, the lessons shared, the encouragement given and the countless moments spent helping a child find their way in the world.

But today is also a reminder of those who carry the weight of parenting alone.

To every single mum and single dad doing the work of two people, making difficult decisions, juggling responsibilities, wiping away tears, celebrating victories and simply doing their very best each day – this day is for you too.

You may not always hear it, and it may not always feel like enough, but the love, commitment and resilience you show matters more than you know.

So wherever you are today, whether surrounded by family or quietly getting through another day, take a moment to recognise what you have achieved.

Happy Father's Day to all fathers and father figures.

And a special Happy Single Parent Day to those raising children with strength, courage and unconditional love.

Voices behind the care 💙💚

People sometimes ask why I spend time supporting charities when work is already busy.

The answer is simple.

Because our communities matter.

Organisations like Headway Devon and Westbank Community Health and Care do incredible work supporting people every day, often quietly behind the scenes.

People like Ruth Wells and Andrew Hood and their teams make a real difference to so many lives.

But these relationships matter for another reason too.

Over the next few years, health and care will increasingly move into communities through neighbourhood team models and a stronger left shift away from hospital-based care.

For that to work, it will rely on trust, collaboration and strong relationships between charities, social care, primary care and community organisations.

The relationships we build today will become the foundations of the system tomorrow.

Sometimes supporting others isn’t about doing something big.

It’s simply about showing up.

As social care providers, we genuinely care about the people we support. We build relationships, we know our residents and clients well, and of course we want the very best outcomes for them.

We also see the enormous pressures our wider health colleagues are under... ambulance crews, paramedics, emergency departments, and acute trusts.

But it’s worth asking ourselves an uncomfortable question from time to time:

When someone in our care becomes unwell, are we always as prepared as we could be?

If we need to call 999, or when a paramedic arrives at the door, do we have clear baseline information ready? Can we confidently explain what is normal for that person, what has changed, and why we are concerned?

Because in those moments, information really matters.

Phrases like “I’m not sure, I’ve just come on shift” are completely understandable in busy services — but they can have real consequences. If a clinician cannot quickly build a picture of the person’s usual presentation, the safest decision will often be hospital conveyance, even when it might not have been strictly necessary.

That isn’t a criticism, it’s just the reality of risk management in urgent care.

A little preparation can make a huge difference.

Simple things help:

• Clear baseline / usual presentation
• What has changed and when
• Relevant recent history
• Current observations (where appropriate)
• Medication records (including EMAR)
• Recent medication changes
• Escalation plans

But beyond the paperwork, it’s really about asking:

Would any member of the team be able to support a safe handover right now?
Is key information easy to find in a pressured situation?
Would an external clinician immediately understand this person’s norm?

Good decisions depend on good information.

Being prepared in these moments is not just good organisation, it is part of protecting the people we support and helping the wider system make the right clinical decisions.

Just something worth reflecting on.
