Don't take your child's angry outbursts of defiant behaviour personally. They are in a state of overwhelm and lack the ability to communicate with words. They feel isolated and in danger. They are trying to tell you "I need help". Its not about you (although it definitely feels like it is!). Your child is showing you that they know how to stand up for what they believe in and they have a strong sense of what is fair and not fair. Try and take a breath and wait for the storm to blow over before you talk to them.

The words we use to label and describe our children matter. It not only affects how the child sees themselves, but how we see them and therefore how we treat and support them. Instead of seeing them as distractible, we can see them as being great at noticing the small things, instead of seeing them as hyperactive, we can see them as energetic, passionate, well coordinated. If we can focus on their strengths, we can begin to see their superpowers.

Working together with your child to create solutions to problems has so many benefits:
*it resolves the problem
*it teaches your child problem solving skills
*you show your child you are interested in their thoughts and feelings
*it teaches your child that you can resolve problems through collaboration (which is kind, thoughtful and respectful) rather than through unilateral means (control, consequences, punishment)
I think our world could do with more adults who understood these principles.

Did you know that some children have challenging behaviour because they don't have the necessary skills to deal with the demands of the situation. Using behaviour modification techniques like time outs and consequences doesn't give them the skills they need. It just makes them feel alone and the only lesson they will learn is that you don't care about them.

Imagine telling your best friend who was really stressed to go and sit by themselves for a while until they were ready to be calm. That's what we are doing when we put a child in time out. All it teaches them is that you don't care about how they feel.

An interesting fact about discipline:-
The word “discipline” is from the Latin word disciplina, meaning “instruction and training.” It is derived from the root word discere—”to learn.” Its where the word Disciple comes from.

So, the original meaning of the word is not about punishments or consequences, time outs or bribes, its about teaching and learning.

Totally agree with the wonderful Dr Ross Green when he says this about star charts "a sticker is just a sticker. A sticker can not take the place of you. A kid can't have a relationship with a sticker. Communicate, have a relationship with them - that's all you"

"Discipline is helping a child solve a problem. Punishment is making a child suffer for having a problem. To raise problem solvers, focus on solutions, not retribution."
