Did you know❓

An estimated 42,258 deaths worldwide between 2000-2016 have been attributed to occupational exposure to silica, according to a World Health Organisation and International Labour Organisation report. In addition, 1.3 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) have been attributed to occupational exposure to silica in the same period.

Common tasks where people may be exposed to respirable silica dust include:
• breaking, crushing, grinding or milling silica-containing material such as concrete, aggregate or mortar
• drilling, cutting, chiselling or sanding silica-containing material
• dealing with cement
• moving earth, eg excavating, mining, quarrying or tunnelling
• abrasive blasting or sandblasting
• laying, maintaining or replacing ballast
• handling, mixing or shovelling dry materials that include silica
• dry sweeping of materials after a task where silica dust has been created.

Preventing exposure to respirable crystalline silica is the only reliable method to protect workers’ health. National Auditing and Training provide this type of information to delegates completing their Site Safety courses. Did you know❓

If you work in England or Scotland, you must undertake a reassessment to renew your SWQR card. Once the expiry date has passed the card will be invalid and you will be unable to work in operations requiring a SWQR card. The reassessment can be completed between the first year of the ID card’s life and up to five years after the card has expired.

Although it is strongly recommended you complete a reassessment if you work in Northern Ireland or Wales, as it will enable you to work throughout the UK, it is not mandatory.

Falling from height is the most common cause of workplace fatalities – there have been 683 since 2005. Provisional figures for 2021/22 show that of 30 fatal accidents involving construction workers, 13 were falls from height. Providing employees with the correct equipment, which is regularly inspected and, ensuring competence through site inductions and effective training will reduce the risk of injury or fatality.

National Auditing and Training offer numerous safe work at height courses (both accredited and in-house) and auditing services including; risk assessments and method statements, harness and fall arrest and, ladder courses. Heavy plant and equipment have a key role in construction, but it also has the potential to cause severe accidents. In the construction sector, there were 30 fatal injuries to workers and 5 to members of the public in 2021/22. After falls, the most common cause of fatal or serious accidents in the construction industry are incidents with plant and equipment (10 fatalities in 2021/2022).

Some tips for maintaining site safety in relation to plant and machinery:
• Ensure all operators are trained and competent to operate the piece of plant they are in control of.
• Ensure pre-use checks are carried out before every use. Report faults and do not use until the fault has been rectified.
• Ensure lifting equipment has a valid certification.
• Regularly service and maintain plant and equipment
• Ensure vehicles and pedestrians are segregated.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 600 million people become ill after eating contaminated food every year and, the Food Standards Agency estimates that the burden of food-borne illnesses in the UK is approximately £9bn per year.

Food may become contaminated by biological (bacteria, viruses and mould), physical and chemical hazards. Pathogens (food-poisoning bacteria) could be present in food without you knowing it as they don’t have an affect on the taste, smell or appearance of food.

The top causes of food-borne illnesses are:
• contaminated ingredients or raw foods,
• inadequate reheating,
• cross-contamination and,
• advance preparation

Contamination can occur at any stage of food production process. Food businesses have a responsibility and legal obligation to ensure that the food they produce/handle/sell is safe for consumers to eat.
