hosted a brilliant day this week with the Northern Ireland heats of the First Lego League.

This is a great group project for home educators, and well worth checking out via the IET (link in comments!). In addition to coding skills, there are so many transferable 'soft' skills to pick up from presenting, research, and teamwork!

My last volunteer shift at NI Science Festival 2026, and my favourite fact from the Dinosaurs event with Professor Ben Garrod is: T Rex might have sounded like a wood pigeon!

If you're in Belfast and get a chance, try to catch the Pox, Plague, and Paupers tour, run by Dr Robyn Acheson - it's excellent!

I was volunteering with NISF and was lucky enough to be assigned to help on her tour. It was great to wander past the old Belfast workhouse, to learn about the inspiring Ella Pirie, and to get to visit the Friars Bush cemetery (which had been on my wishlist for years!)

I'll drop her website address in the comments - check her out if you can!

At least I'm consistent in life 🀭

The cobwebby thing is the winter nest of the Pine Processionary Moth. Come late winter and early spring, caterpillars emerge from the nest and march down the trunk of the tree one after another so that they can bury themselves in soil to pupate. They follow a pheromone trail, and they can even distinguish between an old and a new scent track.

I'm all for practicing until you gain the skill, and fresh air, and exercise, and facilitating all of that, but still, a small part of me whispers "why does it have to be skateboarding in January" πŸ˜–

I'm identifying with this fungi this morning... Beyween you n me, I'm not sure if the snow-soft launch of January is a good thing - it's absolutely reinforcing procrastination as a valid option for 2026 πŸ˜–πŸ€
