🌊 Thinking about a career in the water?

Our next NVBLQ Beach Lifeguard Course starts 29th September in Newquay, Cornwall.

Whether you’re looking to start working as a lifeguard, move into the watersports industry, add another qualification to your outdoor career, or simply develop your skills and confidence around the sea, this is a great place to start.

Over five days, you’ll work on:

⛑️ Rescue techniques
🌊 Water safety & hazard awareness
🩹 First aid & casualty care
🧠 Decision making & incident management
🤝 Working effectively as part of a team

And importantly, you’ll put those skills into practice through realistic scenarios in the water and on the beach.

You can’t learn to lifeguard from a classroom alone. 🌊

At Vertical Descents, we believe good lifeguard training needs to be practical, realistic and challenging.

Our NVBLQ Beach Lifeguard Course combines the knowledge and skills you need with plenty of time spent putting them into practice in real coastal environments.

You’ll learn how to assess hazards, respond to incidents, perform rescues, manage casualties and make decisions when conditions aren’t perfect.

All while being supported and challenged by experienced instructors who want you to leave the course feeling genuinely confident in your abilities.

A great evening of water safety training with the .Blue.Balls and groups 🌊

We’re always happy to run workshops for local communities because the more people who feel confident and capable around the water, the safer Newquay becomes.

The session covered practical water rescue techniques using surfboards, throwlines and rescue tubes

🏄 🛟 ⛑️

But we also looked at making the most of what you might already have to hand, from a kayak paddle to a dry bag. When something goes wrong, knowing how to use the equipment around you can make all the difference.

We also covered some basic first aid, incident management and, importantly, how to approach a situation safely without putting yourself at unnecessary risk.

A really positive evening of learning, discussion and practical scenarios.

Empowering more people with the knowledge and confidence to help keep each other safe in and around the water can only be a good thing.

One of the most valuable parts of lifeguard training?

Realistic rescue scenarios.

During training we run practical situations that may involve:

🌊 Multiple casualties
🌊 Communication under pressure
🌊 Casualty care and handover to emergency services
🌊 Dynamic risk assessment in changing conditions

Scenarios start simple and gradually become more complex as candidates build knowledge and confidence.

Every exercise is followed by group debriefs, peer feedback and instructor reflection, helping turn each scenario into real learning.

Being a lifeguard isn’t just about swimming fast.

It’s about decision making, teamwork, communication, and staying calm under pressure when people need help.

During our lifeguard courses we train candidates in:

✔ Basic life support and casualty care
✔ Incident management and teamwork

Last-minute spaces now available 🌊⛑️

Our Surf Coach Safety & Rescue training runs 30th June – 2nd July, and we’ve just had a couple of late availability places open up.

This course is designed for surf coaches and watersports professionals who want to build confidence, improve safety awareness, and develop strong rescue and incident management skills in real coastal conditions.

Over three days you’ll cover:
• Surf rescue techniques
• Water safety and risk awareness
• Scenario-based training
• Decision making under pressure
• Working effectively in dynamic conditions

Training takes place on the Cornish coast, using real environments to reflect the reality of working in surf and coastal settings.
