📱 Have you missed us on Facebook this year?
You may have noticed that we've been a little quieter online than in previous years. That was a deliberate decision, and one we're really pleased we've made.
As a smartphone free school, we want children to spend their time fully immersed in the experiences in front of them rather than performing for a camera. At the same time, the online world is changing rapidly and we believe schools have a responsibility to think carefully about how children's images and information are shared. We still love celebrating our pupils' achievements, but we've chosen to do so in a more balanced way through closed platforms such as Class Dojo, where families can continue to share these special moments.
The downside, of course, is that many people don't get to see just how much happens at St Newlyn East Learning Academy. So, before we head into the summer holidays, we wanted to share just a few of this year's highlights...
✨ Year 6 explored London on an incredible residential trip that we organise ourselves, helping to keep costs down for families.
🏕️ Residential adventures for all, from Lappa Valley in Year 2, to Tomperrow in Year 3, Okehampton in Year 4, Porthpean in Year 5 and London in Year 6.
🏄 Year 4 spent the summer term learning to surf at Crantock. A huge thank you to the Trevilsion Trust and Big Green Surf for making this possible.
🌳 Forest School experiences for Years 1, 2 and 5, alongside Beach School for our Reception children.
🌿 Significant improvements to our outdoor environment, including investment in our Forest School and Outdoor Classroom, made possible through the generosity of Newquay Radio, St Newlyn East Parish Council, our PTA and some truly incredible parents.
❤️ A genuine commitment to children's wellbeing, with trauma-informed practice at the heart of what we do, including Draw and Talk, Lego Therapy, nurture provision and, of course, our much-loved therapy dog, Hector.
🏅 Fantastic participation and success in Newquay Sports Network events throughout the year.
🚌 Visits to the National Maritime Museum, Nancarrow Farm, Hendra Newquay Rocks Climbing Wall and many more memorable learning experiences beyond the classroom.
⛪ A valued partnership with the Good Companions group and community celebrations at St Newlyn Church for Harvest, Christmas and Easter. And a ridiculous staff pantomine and comic relief task master.
🎨 Our very first Art Exhibition, celebrating the creativity and talent of our pupils, alongside book swaps, reading picnics and a range of activities to mark the National Year of Reading.
💦 A truly epic whole-school water fight!
🎉 Wonderful PTA events, including the Splash Dash, Christmas Fayre and Summer Fayre, bringing our whole community together while raising valuable funds for the school.
⚽ A Sports Day to remember, wraparound care that children genuinely love attending, and a huge range of clubs including TEC Girls, Eco Homes, Plymouth Argyle coaching, Perranporth Rugby Club, Cornish Pirates coaching, Minecraft Club and LEGO League.
🎭 A wonderfully ridiculous staff pantomime and a Comic Relief Taskmaster challenge, reminding everyone that laughter, fun and making memories are just as important as learning.
🎪 A Day at the Circus, our end-of-year production, visits from authors, career talks and inspiring sessions with local community groups.
📚 And amongst all of that...
Our children achieved exceptional outcomes. From Reception to Year 6, pupils made excellent progress and performed exceptionally well across every statutory assessment.
But what makes us proudest can never be measured in a test. It's the kindness, confidence, resilience and enthusiasm our children show every single day. We are incredibly fortunate to be part of such a supportive school and village community.
