Weever fish, if you tread on one: 10-15 minutes hot water tops and I find the pain varies depending on how hard you stand on them. Also, considering I have worked as a surf coach for the last 18 years, sometimes 3 lessons per day, you’d be surprised to learn I’ve probably had maybe 15 encounters and I reckon only 3 that really hurt, but none of them as immediately painful as a bee sting. In my opinion, remain barefoot, perhaps try shuffling your feet in the water instead of stomping around 🙏

Mawgan Porth lifeguards 👏👏👏

A huge congratulations to RNLI lifeguards Alex Ashen and Vittoria Farmer who have been awarded a Bronze Medal for Gallantry, and Theresa Morokutti who received a framed Letter of Thanks from the Chairman of the RNLI for their bravery and skill in saving a man’s life. 🎖️

The lifeguards were involved in the dramatic rescue on Mawgan Porth beach in June, after Jon Marshall got caught in a rip current and was dragged out to sea.

Fighting the powerful rip current and large crashing waves, Jon struggled to keep his head above the water and the lifeguards knew it was a race against time to save his life. As they battled the ferocious conditions, despite being extremely physically fit and experienced water users, Alex and Tori were unable to get Jon fully onto their rescue boards and surf him back to shore. The rip current was pushing them all further away to deeper water.

Theresa watched the situation unfold from the shore and knew her colleagues needed help, so she launched the Rescue Water Craft and used her skills to battle the waves and reach Jon. They eventually managed to get Jon back to the safety of the shore.

Speaking about how she felt in the moment she saw Jon being taken back to shore, Tori said, ‘It was relief, it was shock, it was adrenaline, so much adrenaline. It was absolute satisfaction and pure happiness as well. I know this rescue will stick with me for the rest of my life.’

Their courage, selflessness, determination and surf skills saved Jon’s life.

If you ever find yourself caught in a rip current:

- Don’t try to swim against it or you’ll get exhausted.
- If you can stand, wade don’t swim.
- If you can, swim parallel to the shore until free of the rip and then head for shore.
- Always raise your hand and shout for help.

Crazy winter so far! Coach nick has been getting stuck in at the UK’s famous big wave surf spot, ‘THE CRIBBAR’.
A couple of weeks ago Nick paddled out in twenty foot surf with a small crew of local chargers to face down the solid swell.
Stay tuned as the winter swells are well underway and Nick will be sharing more adventures and tips on how to prepare for this kind of action!

It’s the 1% things that matter. I wouldn’t start the advanced coaching sessions with these girls until we cleaned up this board. The wax job might be only one percent of your surfing but when you start to add up the little things they form the whole picture. Wax, leash, fins, warm up, assessing the conditions, eating well, being hydrated....all these things are in your control.
We have had some epic September conditions over the last two days and I’m looking forward to doing some more advanced coaching as autumn and winter fill in.

If you’re ever looking for a surf lesson in Sennen, Sam is your man

Meet the team:
Sam, the eldest Smart sibling founded the surf school in the year 2000 under the name of ‘Blue Lagoon surf school’ during and after his 7 year lifeguarding career at Sennen and Gwenver - he began lifeguarding at the age of 16.
His aim was to create a surf school with his brothers that was the most safest, enjoyable and progressive surf school as possible and so Smart Surf was born.
He’s spent many summers on the East coast of Australia, learning the surf school trade with some of the best surf teachers and surf schools out there.
Using this priceless experience, sam has injected his knowledge into the Smart Surf School’s 5 day syllabus.
He was a runner up in the English Surfing nationals as well as the ABA English boxing nationals and went on to peruse successful professional careers in both disciplines.
For Sam, its now all about the surf school and keeping his students safe, stoked and inspired.

Part of our COVID ready plans: when we issue your wetsuit for your lesson, it goes in a bucket. When you’re in your wetsuit, your clothes go in the bucket. When you’re out surfing, your bucket is stored safely indoors. When you return from your lesson, your wet wetsuit goes back in the bucket and we wash it. The bucket gets disinfected and dried, ready for the next session.

Our Story

The Surf Club Cornwall was started by Nick in October 2006. Nick started coaching for the British Surfing Association in 2003 (now Surfing England) whilst also competing on the UK Pro Tour.

Having toured around the UK, Europe and the world competing as well as working at the world famous Fistral Beach in Newquay, Nick felt it was time to open his own place and share some of his knowledge.

Nick still actively competes as well as teaching regular lessons and his experience is wide and varied having surfed in every type of conditions imaginable from blizzards of snow in the depths of a UK winter to the blistering sunshine of a tropical island!

Our inspiration very much comes from the World Surf Leagues (WSL) high performance athletes and we try and share a little bit of that with every student.
