More Than a Painting… A Memory

There is something rather special about watching an en plein air painting of Mawgan Porth find its new home…

This painting has now gone to its new owners, and that smile says so much about why art matters.

Sometimes a painting becomes a memory of Cornwall. Sometimes it holds a favourite beach, a feeling of peace, or a moment you want to keep.

That is why I love both painting and teaching here. Whether someone is buying an artwork, taking art lessons, or learning to see the world differently, it is never only about paint on canvas.

It is about seeing more deeply… feeling more connected… and taking a little piece of Mawgan Porth home.

Art is more than a painting.

It is a memory.

The weather forecast wasn’t exactly promising… but sometimes those turn out to be the best days.

I spent a couple of hours painting on Mawgan Porth Beach with this lovely couple… one from Cornwall and one from France. There were plenty of laughs, a few raindrops, lots of conversation and, by the end, two beautiful little paintings to take home.

What I love most about teaching isn’t really the painting itself. It’s watching people discover they can do something they didn’t think they could do.

As we painted, we talked about colour, light, atmosphere and what we are really seeing when we look at the sea and sky. Slowly the uncertainty disappears, confidence grows, and suddenly they’re holding a painting they are genuinely proud of.

The paintings are lovely…

But the smiles tell the real story.

I still love Mawgan Porth and Bedruthan Steps / Carnewas
It is such an incredible place to paint and such a privilege to have been teaching and painting here for 10 years now.....

A Huge Thank You from Mawgan Porth

Just home after a long, busy, beautiful day by the sea… so instead of writing a full post about everything that happened, I simply wanted to say a huge, heartfelt thank you.

For 10 years, Mawgan Porth has been such a special part of my story.

Whether you have stopped to talk to me while I’m painting on the beach… had a lesson with me face to face, online or via Zoom… bought a painting, print or commission… or joined one of my big team-building events through Visual Awareness… I am genuinely grateful.

Every conversation, every smile, every question, every lesson, every painting that finds a home… it all means the world.

Art has a funny way of opening conversations, memories and connections, and I never take that for granted.

Mawgan Porth is beautiful because of the sea, the light, the cliffs and the changing colours… but it is the people I meet that make each day so special.

So tonight, tired but very grateful, I just wanted to say thank you.

You are all part of the story of Art at the Beach.

The Smile Says It All

A 12-year-old sat with me on Mawgan Porth Beach, painting the view en plein air… and in two hours she produced this beautiful little seascape.

While she painted, we talked about what she was actually looking at… the geology of the headland, why the sky appears blue, why the sea can look aqua, and why the colours we think we see are not always the colours that are really there.

That matters, because painting becomes far easier when children understand the view rather than guessing at it. They begin to see shapes, light, colour, distance and movement as connected pieces of information.

She learnt how to simplify the headland, place the horizon, notice the changing tones in the water, catch the sparkle of the sea, and choose colours based on observation rather than habit.

Zoom in and you can even see the three tiny figures she added… herself, her brother and her sister… standing in the landscape she had created.

Her parents were amazed by how much she had learnt, and by the quality of the painting she completed in such a short time.

For me, this is the real reward of teaching art… seeing that moment when someone begins to understand what they are doing and why it works.

The smile says everything.

En Plein Air at Mawgan Porth Beach

Painted today at Mawgan Porth Beach… en plein air, directly from the beautiful view in front of me.

It was one of those sunny Cornwall days when the water was sparkling and tranquil, the tide was gently moving, and the soft clouds made the whole sky feel calm and open.

This is quite a large canvas, as you can probably see from the photos, and it was completed on the beach in one day, surrounded by the real light, colour, reflections, cliffs, sea air and movement of Mawgan Porth.

One of the things I love most about painting en plein air is that it becomes more than a painting day. People stop, talk, ask questions, watch the artwork grow, and share little moments of connection.

Today I spoke to people from all different places and nationalities… all drawn for a moment into the same view.

Then, towards the end of the day, two young ladies, not quite teenagers yet, decided to adopt me for a while. They helped me with my photos, sat chatting, and watched me paint.

That made the day extra special.

I love it when children or young people are curious enough to stop, watch and ask questions. They are learning without pressure… seeing how a painting is built from observation, light, shape, colour, atmosphere, perspective and understanding.

For me, this is where art, teaching and wellbeing naturally meet.

Painting outside is calming, but it is also full of knowledge. It asks you to slow down, look properly, notice what is really there, and feel connected to the place in front of you.

That is the heart of Visual Awareness… learning to see, understand and trust what you notice.

A beautiful Mawgan Porth day… captured in paint, conversation, sunshine and memory.
