Quintrell Downs Montessori School

The children have been busy measuring their sunflowers as they grow and recording their findings on a pictograph. This activity has been a wonderful way to deepen their mathematical understanding through number recognition and measurement, whilst also supporting their communication and language skills and helping them make sense of the world around them.

Watering our sunflowers to help support responsibility and fine motor skills while connecting with nature. We are helping the children to recognise when their plant is thirsty, and how to gently water them.

We recently enjoyed a lovely visit to the garden centre. On our walk there, the children looked for signs of spring to support this term’s topic and they all agreed that the blossom on the trees was their favourite.
At the garden centre the children made thoughtful decisions about which plants they would like for the preschool garden. They explored the different colours and discussed which ones would look nice together. We also took the opportunity to go on both a number hunt and a letter hunt reading the signs all around us.
It was a fabulous visit that supported learning across all areas of the early years curriculum.

We have been creating self portraits, giving the children the chance to look closely in the mirror and identify and describe their own features. This supports their growing understanding of who they are and helps them to build self-awareness. We also spent time looking at our friend’s faces noticing how we are all the same in many ways, but also wonderfully different. This activity supports the children’s understanding of the world and enriches rich communication and language. It also links beautifully with expressive art and design, while strengthening fine motor skills through careful drawing and mark-making.

This week we have been learning about sunflowers, we have planted seeds and it has also inspired some lovely artwork!
