For some, it has been growing in confidence and believing in themselves again. For others, it has been rebuilding trust in education, attending sessions consistently, developing new skills, preparing for exams, or simply taking the next small step on their learning journey.

Six years ago, I left teaching with one simple hope…

To create a place where children could enjoy learning again.

I didn’t have a business background or a grand plan. I just knew there were children who needed something a little different.

What started as a small tutoring centre with just me and one tutor has grown into a close-knit team of over 12 passionate educators, supporting children through private tuition, GCSEs, SEND and Alternative Provision.

We’ve learnt so much along the way, but one thing hasn’t changed.

We still believe every child deserves to feel understood.

We still take time to get to know every child and work together to find the approach that helps them thrive.

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far Kernow Tuition has come.

But I’m even more excited about where we’re heading.

Understanding Alternative Provision: A Different Pathway

Many children thrive within mainstream school environments. Schools work incredibly hard to adapt and respond to the needs of children and young people, and for many learners those adaptations make a significant difference.

However, there are times when a child may need something different for a period of time—a fresh start, a smaller environment, or a different pace and approach to learning in order to begin rebuilding confidence again.

At Kernow Tuition, we work closely with schools and the Local Authority to support children who are currently unable to attend school, or who are finding education particularly challenging at this point in time. Our role is not to replace school, but often to provide a bridge—supporting young people to re-engage with learning in a way that feels safe, achievable and sustainable.

Alternative provision is not about lowering expectations. It is about recognising that success does not always follow one single pathway, and that sometimes stepping sideways for a period of time can help a child move forwards more successfully in the long term.
