Hi everyone. Developing a child's understanding is key to their overall communication skills.
Below are some great and simple strategies to develop early understanding. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

One of the best strategies you can use to support communication development is to allow more time for your child to process information and respond to you.
You don't have to fill every silent gap with talking. Allowing extra time for thinking is very important.

Talking to your child is very important. It will help develop all aspects of communication including understanding and use of language as well as speech production. Here are some helpful tips.
A post relevant for all of our teachers, SEN/ALNco's and other education providers! 📢
Here is a great document created by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) outlining the recommendations, considerations and benefits of commissioning Speech and Language Therapy Services within schools. We've had a number of enquires in recent weeks so we hope this provides some clarity for our teacher colleagues.
This form of collaboration between health (therapies) and education (schools) is an excellent way for settings to demonstrate compliance with the new Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and Education Tribunal Bill in Wales and Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice in England.

With particularly young children, it can be challenging to identify if your child's language and communication development is simply 'delayed' or, if there is something else hindering progress.
We often look for a number of 'markers' that may suggest underlying difficulties. The occurrence of a number of these 'early signs', some of which have been beautifully presented by the National Autism Center at May Institute, may lead to further investigation or an onward referral depending on the child's individualised needs.
It is often best to check with a professional as early as possible if you have concerns about any area of development. Early identification and intervention leads to better outcomes.
