One of the best strategies you can use to support communication development is to allow more time for your child to process information and respond to you.

You don't have to fill every silent gap with talking. Allowing extra time for thinking is very important.

If your child isn't saying as many words as you would expect or perhaps their understanding is limited, try following their lead and commenting on what they are doing during play.

Try not to ask many questions and instead model basic language. Below are some simple yet amazing strategies to help.

Here is a great document created by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) outlining the recommendations, considerations and benefits of commissioning Speech and Language Therapy Services within schools. We've had a number of enquires in recent weeks so we hope this provides some clarity for our teacher colleagues.

With particularly young children, it can be challenging to identify if your child's language and communication development is simply 'delayed' or, if there is something else hindering progress.

We often look for a number of 'markers' that may suggest underlying difficulties. The occurrence of a number of these 'early signs', some of which have been beautifully presented by the National Autism Center at May Institute, may lead to further investigation or an onward referral depending on the child's individualised needs.

It is often best to check with a professional as early as possible if you have concerns about any area of development. Early identification and intervention leads to better outcomes.
