Conker season is upon us, so I thought I’d talk about SPLINTERS
Splinters can be caused by many things including wood, and plants and bushes with thorns which are the most common.
It can cause pain, redness and you can often see a dot or a spike coming out of the skin at the site.
So, how do we remove them in the emergency department?
👩⚕️ Keep it simple!
First try using tweezers to gently remove the part you can see
👩⚕️ If you can’t grab anything, gently scrape away the top layer of skin in case it’s just below the surface to get with your tweezers
👩⚕️ In older children (who are old enough not to remove a dressing and eat the paste), you can buy magnesium sulfate paste from any chemist - simple put a blob of this paste directly over the splinter and put a dressing on. Leave it overnight and in the morning it’s likely the splinter will have been drawn out of the skin!
If you’re concerned an area is becoming redder, you’re unsure what caused the splinter (and if there’s a chance it might be glass or something else) or you’re generally worried about your child, you must still seek medical help

"All babies and young children cry. Some cry more than others, and some cry more in particular situations, like settling into a childcare setting. Each child is different and will experience new situations differently, but it is fair to say that the transition to childcare is a major event in their lives. Some will have never been with anyone other than their parents or carers, some will have rarely left their home, and some will have never been in a large group..."
