At The John Frost School, we are aware that some of our students are young carers. A Young Carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition or an addiction problem.
Children may engage in:

Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
Managing medication
Looking after younger siblings
Helping someone communicate

When completing one or more of these tasks becomes a necessity, then we would classify a student as a young carer. Research suggests there are at least 800,000 young carers in the UK, but many do not realise they are a young carer.

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. At The John Frost School, we are committed to ensuring that all students who are young carers are identified and supported effectively.

We can offer additional pastoral support, small group workshops, lunch clubs and access to other opportunities inside and outside school. We link up with the local Young Carers Service and Barnardo's to offer our students more support both within school and outside of school.

At The John Frost School, we have a lead professional, Mrs L Pollard, who has responsibility for ensuring all young carers are able to enjoy school and make good progress. If you think your child might be a young carer or could be affected by any of the issues we have highlighted, please let us know. You can contact the school on 01633 654100 and ask to speak to Mrs Pollard, who is available to help you.

For more information on how we support our Young Carers, please read the supporting documents or follow the Barnado's link below:

Before half term, we took 46 students to the annual Hay Festival! The aim of the festival is to bring readers and writers together to share stories and ideas and is a a great opportunity for students to meet their favourite authors! This year, students attended a talk by Ashley Hickson- Lovence who discussed his latest YA novel-in-verse, Wild East and the infamous Anthony Horowitz who discussed his world of daring chase scenes and deadly assassins in his latest book series, Nightshade Revenge. Students had a great time and as always were a credit to the school!

Congratulations to year 10 student Tom who was selected to represent Cricket Wales in the recent fixtures vs Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.
Well done Tom, we are extremely proud of you.

The Friends of The John Frost School are organising a BOOTSALE at the school on Sunday May 19th. Gates will open to the public at 9.00am.

If you wish to sell then please go to on Instagram or John Frost PTA parents, teachers and friends of the school on Facebook for more details.

Over the past 6 months, 8 year 12 students - Ralph, Yusef, Raedh, Xavier, Jacen, Kofi, Samiya and Taiyabah participated in the EESW STEM Cymru project, working on a brief set by a company called Gilcrest Manufacturing. On Friday March 22nd the students had the opportunity to showcase their outcome at Swansea Arena. They were up against a lot of tough competition in other schools, but did themselves proud during the interview, presentation and written report. At the end of the day they were presented with the award for 'Best Overall Written Report' and a prize of £500. All students were an absolute credit to the school and should all be so proud of themselves and what they have achieved.

An end to end game which could have gone either way just tipped in Panteg’s favour, with the last kick of the game.
All four JFS boys played exceptionally well and have done the school proud.

This years company, Stitch Lab, attended the South East Wales Showcase finals on 15th April. There was a lot of competition this year and the team were up against some very successful businesses! But they did fantastic in the interview, trade stand, report and presentation to come this years runner up company and secure their place at the Welsh Finals being held in May where they will try to win the chance to represent Wales in the UK final. A huge thanks to the Friends of TJFS for enabling us to purchase a drop down banner and back board, it made Stitch Lab’s trade stand the best there with lots of compliments from the public and the judges.

A big thank you to The Friends of The John Frost School who recently helped secure a £525 donation from the Asda Foundation to help with costs of the school breakfast club

This week, over 40 students visited the city of Bath and watched a live performance of the magnificent play ‘Blood Brothers.’ Students had an amazing time watching the show and listening to the songs of the play. Some students will sit their literature exam on this text, so it was a wonderful opportunity for students to watch the play and prepare for their exam. As usual, students were a credit to the school and many members of the public complimented them on their conduct and behaviour within the theatre!

A big thank you to Book Council Wales and Griffin Books for helping us bring over 450 books to our students with no cost to the school. A range of books that students have requested, are dyslexic friendly and offer topics and themes our students find interesting. We were also lucky enough to be able to stock our schools bookclubs with some new editions!. We can’t wait to see students’ faces when they see the collection

Well done to our Year 8 students Jayda and Razia for winning last term’s English competition! Students had to design a leaflet encouraging tourists to visit Wales! Da lawn!
