You have probably seen dozens of corneal ulcers in your practice. But how confident are you that you can distinguish, at the first examination, between an ulcer that simply needs time and topical treatment — and one that requires a completely different approach?

That distinction can determine whether the cornea heals uneventfully or progresses to stromal melting, descemetocele formation or perforation.

A non-healing ulcer is where clinical reasoning matters most.

It is tempting to change the antibiotic and wait. But as veterinary ophthalmology guidance and the current literature show, persistent ulceration should prompt reassessment of the underlying cause, corneal integrity, and diagnosis—including SCCED, infection, tear film abnormalities, eyelid disease, or progressive stromal pathology.

➜ Join Charlotte Dawson, DipECVO, Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Ophthalmology at the Royal Veterinary College, for “Managing Canine Corneal Ulcers: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” webinar.

📅 6/10/2026, 19:00-21:00 BST

➜ Register today: https://vet-learn.com/product/managing-canine-corneal-ulcers-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/

The session will cover:
• systematic assessment of canine corneal ulcers
• differentiation of uncomplicated ulcers and SCCEDs
• recognition and management of infected and collagenolytic (“melting”) ulcers
• medical and procedural treatment options
• deep stromal ulcers and descemetoceles
• recognising when referral is indicated

This is the final opportunity to register. Learn how to approach the patient who returns to your consult room because “the ulcer still hasn’t healed” — and avoid simply escalating topical medication without addressing the underlying problem.
