This morning , our preschoolers became chefs. Using child-safe knives, they chopped carrots, potatoes, leeks, onions and peas, developing hand strength and learning to handle a knife safely. They added vegetable stock cubes and seasoning, and tasted what they'd made. Confidence grows when a child tastes something they've prepared with their own hands.

Across the EYFS, this activity wove through multiple areas of learning. Physical Development came through chopping. Personal, Social and Emotional Development emerged as children felt proud and tried new tastes. Communication and Language developed as they named ingredients and followed steps. Understanding the World opened through observing how heat transforms food.

Cooking together is how children learn they can make something real, nourishing, and worth sharing.

🌈 Rainbow Rain!💧

When children squeeze, scoop and mix gloop, they're building hand strength for writing, exploring how colours merge and blend, and developing the fine motor control that underpins early literacy.

Our gloop combines cornflour, water and food colouring. As children add colour, they observe how shades shift and swirl, beginning to understand colour mixing and transformation. With kitchen utensils—sieves, spoons, scoops—children refine their grip and develop the precision needed for writing.

Developmentally, gloop play supports multiple areas of learning. Physical Development comes through fine motor practice. Personal, Social and Emotional Development emerges as children gain confidence in their ideas and persist with challenges. Communication and Language develops naturally as adults name what they notice. Understanding the World opens through sensory exploration and colour discovery.

What looks like messy play is actually rich development, one handful at a time.

✨Learning through play invitations.✨

Our preschool room is filled with tuff trays—each one a doorway into discovery, shaped by the children's own interests.

One tray holds Superworm, inviting children into the world of the beloved character. Children explore, create, and weave their own stories inspired by the book. Another tray invites construction exploration, where children design and create freely. A third holds small world figures and landscapes, sparking imaginative play and adventure. A fourth recreates a fictional farm visit, bringing new worlds to life.

Each tray is designed to deepen learning across the EYFS. Exploration and play strengthen physical development and creative thinking. Construction develops skills. Small world play and farm exploration build narrative thinking and social understanding—the foundation of storytelling and early literacy.

When children lead their own play, they're developing confidence, curiosity, and independence. They're thinking critically, making decisions, and learning from trial and error. Through play, they're discovering the power of their own voice and imagination.

Preschool independently explored a sensory tray filled with shredded paper and colourful pom poms. They used tweezers to carefully pick up and transfer the pom poms, demonstrating increasing control and coordination in their hand movements. Some children showed perseverance as they practised squeezing the tweezers to grasp the pom poms, while others sorted them by colour and counted how many they had collected.

The children engaged in conversations with their peers and adults, using descriptive language to talk about the textures they could feel and the colours they could see hidden within the shredded paper. They showed curiosity and sustained attention as they searched for the pom poms, remaining focused on the activity for extended periods of time.

EYFS Links:

* Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Developing the strength, coordination and precision needed to use one-handed tools and equipment.
* Communication and Language: Learning new vocabulary and expressing ideas and observations during play.
* Mathematics: Counting, sorting and recognising colours while collecting pom poms.
* Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning: Playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically as children investigated and solved problems during the activities.

This morning, our children became architects and designers, creating homes using loose parts and natural materials arranged in their own way.

Some built homes for their own families, carefully positioning doors and thinking about where mummy and daddy sleep, where baby sits, where the dog stays. Others created spaces for their brothers and sisters, explaining which room was for sleeping or playing. One child balanced materials to create a tall house, adjusting when it wobbled, saying it needed to be strong for everyone who lives there.

What looks like simple building play is where the deepest learning happens. As children created, they were developing spatial awareness and problem-solving. They were thinking deeply about their own family and homes—who lives with them and what spaces everyone needs. They were collaborating and communicating their ideas, and developing fine and gross motor skills as they lifted, balanced, and positioned materials.

This is EYFS in action: Physical Development (motor skills and spatial awareness), Understanding the World (learning about their own homes and families), Communication and Language (sharing and explaining thinking), and Personal, Social and Emotional Development (problem-solving, creativity, sense of belonging).

Small moments. Big development.

This afternoon , our children discovered a bug hunt sensory tuff tray—a world of textures, hiding places, and tiny treasures waiting to be found.

Inside: grass, jelly, and carefully hidden model bugs. They dug with their fingers, picked up mini beasts with coloured tweezers, and lifted grass to search. Some whispered to themselves as they hunted. Others worked alongside friends, pointing out what they'd found. One child spent ten minutes feeling the difference between the cool jelly and soft grass, pressing, squeezing, watching how it moved.

What looks like simple sensory play is where the deepest learning happens. As children explored, they were developing fine and gross motor skills (digging, pinching, grasping with tweezers). They were learning about the natural world—noticing textures, temperatures, and minibeasts. They were building language as they named what they found and shared discoveries. They were regulating themselves through the calm, focused rhythm of the hunt.

This is EYFS in action: Physical Development (fine and gross motor control), Understanding the World (exploring natural materials and minibeasts), Communication and Language (naming, describing, sharing), and Personal, Social and Emotional Development (focus, calm, joy in discovery).

Small moments. Big development.

The tweezers add another layer of fine motor challenge—perfect for developing the hand strength needed for writing.

Today, our preschool children explored faces and features in a thoughtful way. With one child's face gently covered by a clear plastic tub, their friends traced around their nose, eyes, mouth, and ears with pens they'd selected—each child choosing the colour that felt right to them, and later telling us why they'd chosen it.

What looks like simple play is where the deepest learning happens. As children traced, they were developing fine motor control for writing, learning about body awareness and difference, and building spatial understanding. They were developing communication as they named features, noticed what made each face unique, and shared their thinking about colour choices.

This is EYFS in action: Personal, Social and Emotional Development (celebrating difference, building friendships, making choices), Physical Development (fine motor skills), and Communication and Language (naming, talking, sharing thinking).

Small moments. Big development.

Movement. Music. Learning.

This morning, our children joined Kimbles Music and Movement—and it was wonderful to see new faces at the session.

When children move to music, they're building gross motor control, balance, and coordination. They're learning to listen, respond, and express themselves through their bodies. They're discovering confidence in movement.

In the EYFS, physical development through music and rhythm is foundational. Strong bodies, confident learners. Kimbles brings this alive—and children feel the joy in every movement.
