Dear Parents and Carers,
I am writing to inform you that Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday due to the developing heatwave and the projected high temperatures.
Our intention had been to remain open; however, the severity of the current weather warnings cannot be ignored. After careful consideration, I believe that closing the school is the most appropriate course of action. This decision has been made with the wellbeing of our students and staff at the forefront, particularly in light of the conditions within our buildings, despite the control measures we have already put in place.
To ensure continuity of learning, staff will set work on Satchel for each lesson scheduled across both days. Please can I ask that you support your child in accessing and completing this work.
I would also like to update you on the following arrangements:
Year 11 Prom (Wednesday evening) at Hatherley Manor will go ahead as planned. We have confirmed with the venue that air conditioning is in place to ensure students are as comfortable as possible.
Year 10 Geography trip (Wednesday) will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.
I have spent considerable time today reviewing detailed weather reports, monitoring temperatures across different areas of the school, and listening carefully to the views of both students and staff. I am confident that this is the right decision for our school community.
We look forward to welcoming students back on Friday, where we will celebrate being together again with some well-earned ice lollies. Students may continue to wear their PE kit on Friday.
Thank you, as always, for your understanding and support.
Mr B Dumayne
Headteacher
