🦷 TOOTHTASTIC TUESDAY! 🦷

As part of our Healthy Heroes week, today we are focusing on the importance of looking after our teeth and gums.

Good oral health habits start early, and helping children learn how to brush their teeth properly can make a big difference to their overall health and wellbeing. We are sharing a helpful guide for families with lots of useful tips and information about toothbrushing, making dental care part of your daily routine, and why healthy teeth matter.

Don't forget that regular dental check-ups are important too. If you need to find a dentist near you, you can use the NHS dentist finder here: https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-dentist

Drowning Prevention Week

This week marks Drowning Prevention Week, led by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, raising awareness of the importance of water safety for children and families.

Although we have our own focus week taking place in nursery, we wanted to highlight this important campaign and share some useful information with our families.

Alongside this post, we have shared resources created by the Herefordshire School Nursing Service, which provide helpful guidance around staying safe in and around water.

HEALTHY HEROES!

This week at Nursery, we are taking part in the NDNA Healthy Body, Happy Me week.

This year's theme is Healthy Heroes - encouraging physical activity and healthy habits from an early age is a wonderful way to support children's growth, development and wellbeing. Our Healthy Heroes week explores everything that helps our bodies and minds feel their best: moving, eating well, resting, drinking water and connecting with others.

Over the course of this week, we will post ideas of what you can do at home to support your own Healthy Hero!

📺Government Screen Time Guidance for Under 5s 📺

As technology becomes an increasing part of everyday life, understanding healthy screen habits in the early years is more important than ever.

Recently, the government published new, evidence-informed guidance to help parents and carers of children under 5 navigate screen time.

Digital screens are now a normal part of family life. The early years are however critical for development - 90% of a child's brain development occurs by age 5, making it a critical period for the development of social, emotional and cognitive skills.

Click through the slides below to explore the new guidance and discover practical ways to support healthy screen habits for young children.

📖 Last week, a group of our Mountain Room children enjoyed a wonderful visit to our local library.

As well as spending time exploring books and sharing stories together, the children took part in a range of activities including crafts, games and even helping to water the plants in the library garden.

Visits like these provide valuable opportunities for children to engage with their local community, develop a love of books and storytelling, and learn through new experiences, supporting both our Limitless and Diverse curriculum threads.

Water Safety 🌊

Our preschool children enjoyed welcoming two members of staff from Freedom Leisure Swimming Pool this morning, who visited to talk about the importance of water safety.

Learning how to stay safe around water is such an important life skill, the children loved exploring the different swimming aids and equipment whilst learning valuable safety information in a fun and engaging way.

Thank you to the team from Freedom Leisure for delivering such an informative session for the children.

Please see the attached flyer for more information regarding upcoming children’s taster swimming sessions at Freedom Leisure Newent .

Last week, staff from both of our settings completed a Total Communication in Early Years course.

The training explored all the different ways children communicate and understand the world around them - including visuals, symbols, objects of reference, gestures, signing, body language, tone of voice and spoken language.

We also looked at how communication develops from babies through to preschool age, from babbling and pointing to speaking in sentences. The course highlighted how using a total communication approach helps create an inclusive environment where every child feels supported, understood and confident to express themselves.

We also explored reflective audit tools to help us evaluate and strengthen communication opportunities across our settings.

A fantastic and insightful training evening for all involved!
