E3design Ltd

E3design Ltd Award-Winning Industrial Design and Engineering Consultancy based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

As an Industrial design consultancy, E3 Design have a passion for user driven design and believe our key offering is our ability to implement our technical knowledge early into the design process. This strengthens our initial design proposals, giving the products we design the best possible chance to make it to market with the original vision intact. We have an innovative and creative design team

with a proven record of delivering products. Our designers have specialist skills in product/industrial design and development, with particular skills in design for plastic injection moulding and high volume manufacture. Additionally we have developed specialist design skills in plastic mechanisms and drinking fluid dispensing applications

Our team is currently 6 full-time design employees, not including admin staff, students or the financial director. While all our designers have their own particular skills and strengths, all are very capable throughout our process from concept generation through to DFM. E3design has a wealth of experience in Consumer Product, Structural Packaging, Medical, Lighting, Industrial, DFM and even Fashion, this variety of experience allows us to better inform all of our work while still maintaining fresh and creative ideas.

Today is a bitter sweet day!
Our Katie is leaving us to return to Northumbria University to complete her Design for Industry Bachelors.

She has been a great support and addition to the team and we're really going to miss her!

Thanks so much Katie for everything you've done over the last few months. We wish you every success in your future career 🎓️

Today our very own Elizabeth was asked to speak at this month's Rise and Design Event - AI is Great, But...

As you guessed, the talk was about AI in the Design Industry with over 130 people in attendance!

Elizabeth discussed our E3Design history and process and how we are adapting in this new technological climate.

She showcased some of our case studies from clients who have approached us with AI designed concepts, making a strong case for AI as an excellent communicative tool for innovators without prior design experience.

However, as a company we recognise that this can lead innovators into believing that they are closer to manufacturing than they actually are.

That's where we come in. Back to our roots, making concepts a reality!

Elizabeth also discussed ethics, IP and sustainability in AI. Something we are very mindful of and learning about every day.

Thank you to those that came to listen, we hope you had a fantastic morning. Thank you also to Terry for organising!

🐿️ Helping protect Northumberland’s red squirrels through engineering and AI.

At E3D, we’ve been working through the Arrow programme with the National Innovation Centre for Data and the Upper Coquetdale squirrel group to develop camera hardware and AI software that can identify red and grey squirrels, supporting the red squirrel species recovery programme.

Working alongside Dr Peter Michalák and Dr Georgia Atkinson, based at Newcastle University’s National Innovation Centre for Data, we’ve combined our product design and engineering experience with their expertise in artificial intelligence.
Georgia’s background includes using AI to study and identify dolphins, a fascinating example of how expertise developed for marine wildlife can help conservation here in Northumberland.

Today, we visited the Hepple Estate to hand over the hardware and view the sites being used in the trial. It was a great opportunity to see where the technology will be put to work and meet those supporting the project on the ground.

The group photo was captured live by the existing woodland camera setup and sent to Ian Glendinning during today’s visit. The accompanying AI heatmaps show examples of red and grey squirrel identification, highlighting the areas of each image that influence the model’s predictions.

Next step: build a working feeder. With the AI model developed, we’re moving towards integrating the technology into a practical feeder designed to distinguish between the two species and control access to food, with further testing and refinement in the field.
A brilliant collaboration between local conservation knowledge, university research and North East engineering all working towards a future for our native red squirrels.

Turning complex specifications into production-ready fabrication drawings

A multi-national client specialising in Offshore Renewable Technologies needed fabrication drawings for specialised parts, but limited internal capacity was delaying the conversion of complex customer specifications into clear, shop-floor-ready information.

A member of the E3Design team joined the client onsite on a weekly basis to resolve questions, share critical information and stay closely aligned with the wider team. The remaining work was completed remotely, allowing focused drawing production without adding pressure to the client’s internal resource.

The client received a complete fabrication drawing pack in less than half the time their resource-constrained internal team would have required, helping production information keep moving despite limited capacity.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Great North Run 2026 🏃‍♀️ It’s Race Week!

After all the hard work, aching muscles, ice packs and electrolytes… it’s finally here 🏃‍♀️

This week is all about carb‑loading, stretching, and keeping the legs fresh 💪

We keep saying it’s all for this medal, beautifully designed by local artist MUL. But really, it’s for our chosen charities and the incredible causes they support.

We want to take this moment to thank everyone who has donated and sponsored us. We are unbelievably grateful for your support.

Watch out for us on the telly this Sunday!🛣️

And if you haven’t donated yet, there’s still time to support our amazing charities.

How can tolerance stack-up analysis save your business time and money?

A product can look perfect in CAD, but still fail during production or assembly.
That’s why tolerance stack-up analysis is a critical part of the design and engineering process.

When multiple component tolerances accumulate, even small variations can affect fit, function, assembly and overall product performance. By analysing these variations early, potential issues can be identified before they become costly production problems.

At E3Design, we use tolerance analysis to help businesses:

-Improve product reliability
-Reduce assembly issues and rework
-Minimise manufacturing costs
-Optimise tolerances without over-engineering
-Build confidence before moving into production

Good design isn’t just about making something look good. It’s about making sure it works consistently in the real world.

E3Design was created to solve an industry wide problem.

Far too often design consultancies produce beautiful, artistic concepts that cannot be manufactured and engineering teams build functional products that lack aesthetic appeal.

Both disciplines are viable and highly skilled but often do not result in a product that is visually compelling, mechanically sound and ready for real world production.

We sit deliberately in the middle.

Our work is driven by the belief that great products should look good, work flawlessly and be manufacturable without compromise.

That means designing with engineering in mind, engineering with design in mind and making decisions that support tooling, production, sustainability and long term reliability.

E3Design bridges the gap. Creating products that are beautiful, functional and buildable. Just design and engineering working together from day one.

Even well-resourced engineering and design teams can face periods where demand, competing priorities or project bottlenecks place pressure on internal capacity.

Over the last few years, E3Design has supported a global organisation by providing flexible design and engineering resource where it was needed most. This support helped a series of projects progress through to release within required timescales and budgets.

Our involvement included engineering and design input to add technical capacity, project management support to keep deliverables and stakeholders aligned, procurement support to source and manage components and technical documentation to provide the drawings and manufacturing information required for production.

By integrating with the client’s existing team, we helped maintain momentum across multiple projects and supported the delivery of products through development and into manufacture. We’re proud to continue supporting the organisation on its next suite of products.

We’re excited to be taking part in the Better Health at Work Awards, with Bronze as our first target.

We joined because the Awards offer a practical framework for improving workplace health and wellbeing.

They help us turn our good intentions into measurable action.

Our Great North Run efforts have already contributed to this through regular training, improved fitness fundraising for charities that champion public health. With just a sprinkling of competitiveness.

This is the start of a long term journey and we’re excited to build on the momentum!
