Composer Concert – Newcastle Piano Festival 2026 (Application Form) 11/02/2026

CALL FOR COMPOSERS – Newcastle Piano Festival 2026
APPLICATION DEADLINE FRIDAY 13th FEBRUARY AT 5PM
The Great Northern Piano Session – Composer Circle (made possible with support from Musicians Union) is a Newcastle Piano Festival 2026 daytime concert that brings together contemporary composers for a warm, unhurried exploration of new piano-based music.
Curated and hosted by festival patron Steve Luck, the event follows a simple one piece at a time format: each composer briefly introduces a piece, performs it, then passes the piano on to the next person in the circle. Over the course of two hours, the focus moves gently between artists, giving the audience time to listen closely to a range of voices, ideas and approaches in an intimate, welcoming setting. It’s a quiet celebration of original music and the people who write it.
Sunday 22nd March 2026 at 2.30pm - 4.30pm
United Reformed Church, Burdon Terrace, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 3AE
As curator and festival patron, Steve Luck will perform his own solo piano music alongside three other composers working in contemporary piano-based music, each performing an original body of work as part of the 2026 Newcastle Piano Festival.
This concert is focused on new music performed by its creator in an intimate venue with a capacity of under 200. We’re especially keen to hear from emerging and under-represented composers based in the North of England.
What we’re offering
• Paid performance fee: MU Casual Stage Rate (£189.55)
• Inclusion in a professionally curated festival programme
• Opportunity to present your music to an engaged, listening audience
• Q&A with festival audiences
We’d love to hear from you if you:
• Have a strong, distinctive artistic voice
• Can perform a cohesive set of your own original music
• Feel your work connects with the festival’s ethos of innovation, accessibility, education and community
• Are based in, or strongly connected to, the North of England

We particularly welcome applications from women, global majority composers, disabled artists, neurodivergent musicians, and people from low-income backgrounds.

Homecoming, by Steve Luck 28/11/2025

Homecoming is out today.
Really happy to finally share this one — it’s a collection I’m genuinely proud of.

Bandcamp is the most artist-friendly place to listen and support it (and you’ll also find CDs and the sheet music book there):
https://steveluck.bandcamp.com/album/homecoming

It’s also up now on Spotify, Apple Music, and all the usual places.

Some lovely early reactions to Waltz in F Minor:
• “This is a lovely waltz” — Christina
• “Beautiful and really elegant piece” — Richard Laurence
• “Great theme, very engaging” — mnomusic

Hope you enjoy it.

🎹 Line-up update for Saturday’s concert in Blyth

Just a quick note to say that Charlotte Butler is no longer able to perform at Saturday night’s concert at Yamaha Music School due to unforeseen circumstances.

The lovely news is that Aura Mae will now be joining me on the bill. She’s an award-winning pianist and composer based in Newcastle, and her music blends classical piano, contemporary textures, sound art and live improvisation. She’s performed everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to festivals across Europe - and I think you’re going to love her set.

I’ll be playing a full set too - modern, expressive piano pieces in an intimate setting.

📍 Yamaha Music School, Blyth
🗓️ Saturday 26th July
🕢 7.30pm start
