Today, I received a phonecall from one of our past first aid at work candidates.
He was first on the scene to an RTC involving a young child on a scooter and a car.
His first aid quickly came into action, after ensuring the scene was safe, he checked the child's condition, looking for serious injuries. The child was conscious but extremely shaken, his body was going into shock, so he offered reassurance and conducted a quick assessment.
He instructed a bystander to call emergency services. Then, all of the skills he learnt got put to the test due to quite a bad head injury. He applied pressure to the wound with a clean cloth.
He reassured the child to prevent panic. As sirens approached, he prepared to brief the paramedics.
His prompt actions and first aid skills ensured the child received swift care, highlighting the importance of first aid knowledge.
The boy was taken to hospital but shortly released.
Well done Adam, as always, I'm immensely proud 👏
Although stories like this are shocking and not what we want to hear, it does, however, highlight the need for first aid training.

Let's talk about first aid, my opening line when teaching first aid is... "80% of cardiac arrests happen at home so all you're learning today for work in reality isn't!"
First Aid shouldn't be something you've got to do, it should be something you want to do to keep your loved ones and family safe.
Knowing what to do in an emergency and feeling confident to give effective treatment WILL SAVE LIVES!

Yesterday we went out Marden Bridge Middle School to teach 150 year 5 pupils vital life saving skills. Do you know how to put someone in the recovery position? Or perform CPR? Or use a defib? These kids do!
Such vital life saving skills for anyone of any age but if you would like to see us in your child school get in touch and we can send them some details.
Well done to all the mini medics from Whitley Bay they were amazing!
