So, so proud of this young man. He started his private tutorials with me in Year 10, predicted 3s in English language and literature (he won’t mind me saying). Yet, through many obstacles, he only went and smashed GCSE literature and language this year, achieving a 6 in both disciplines (that’s going from a ‘predicted D’ to a ‘high B’ in old money).

Then, as if that’s not enough, Leo has only gone and bagged a special recognition award for English literature at his previous school.

An utter gentleman. Altruistic to the core, Leo is a testament to the notions of perseverance, belief and just pure grit!

Love him!

Well done Leo. The pleasure was all mine. 🎉🎉🎉🥳🍾🎓

Congratulations to all of my English GCSE students (and their families). I’m delighted to say that, for the third year in a row, all of my students (26 of them) passed their GCSE English language and literature exams, a testament to their hard work, grit and perseverance during our one-to-one tutorials.

Enjoy your next chapters folks.

All my best wishes,

Jay

I’m seeing lots of tutors advertising their services for tuition online via beautifully presented video presentations: ‘hi, this is me. I’m X and I set up this “business” to…’

Yet, the focus throughout (these advertisements) seems to be on ‘business!’ Not… education.

Yes, of course, tutors can’t work for free. But, this is, sadly, an unregulated industry (irrespective if you pay for ‘regulation’), so I’m worried the priority for some ‘tutors’ (ex teachers) is moving away from ‘education’ into the corporate world of business (ironically, like the schools they’ve all left to set up their tutoring enterprises).

I may be entirely wrong. Cynical. Envious? No, not yet. Concerned? Yes!

Please be careful folks. Video advertisements sound gorgeous… alluring… so professional. But, if they’re (the hosts) so ‘good’, why the need to produce these advertisements?

I don’t know. I’ve just been scrolling, and it’s quite shocking.

There are great tutors out there. Of course they exist. But please choose one whose focus is congruent with ‘educating’ rather than ‘enterprise’.

I’m not convinced!

And never accept a DBS check as a ‘qualification’. It’s the bare minimum I’d expect from someone working with children. So much so, it shouldn’t need to be said online or in advertising material. ‘I have a DBS check.’ Oh, great, thanks. Why wouldn’t you?

Regulation desperately needed. People are flexing a little too much.
