Starting an apprenticeship this year? Here are a few simple tips that can help you make a strong first impression 👇

✅ Ask questions
You’re there to learn. The more questions you ask, the more knowledge and confidence you’ll build.
✅ Be reliable
Turn up on time, stay organised, and always give your best effort, consistency goes a long way.
✅ Stay off your mobile phone
Employers notice apprentices who stay focused, engaged, and present in the workplace.
✅ Take initiative

Don’t wait to be asked. Offer help, get involved, and take every opportunity to learn new skills.

Every experienced engineer, technician, and tradesperson started somewhere. Apprenticeships are a chance to gain real-world experience, build confidence, and create a career for the future.

Our advice for anyone beginning their apprenticeship journey this year?

Work hard, stay positive, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, that’s where growth happens!

A Day in the Life of an Apprentice Support Technician 🔧

Summer works as a Production Support Technician, helping keep production machinery running efficiently while gaining hands-on engineering experience every day.

“Every Monday morning, I carry out servicing on production machinery. I’m responsible for cleaning down the machines, removing grease contamination from mouldings, and carrying out visual inspections to check for defects before re-greasing key components ready for production runs.”

She also checks machine barrels to ensure materials are in the correct condition, free from contaminants, and ready for use in production.

One of the things Summer enjoys most is the variety the role brings:

“There are a wide range of industries that we produce parts for, such as pharmaceutical and medical. No day is ever the same, and working at a company like Nolato, pioneering technological advancements, keeps things fresh for me.”

From using everyday engineering hand tools like Allen keys and spanners to operating overhead cranes and supporting robot programming on the shop floor, Summer is developing valuable technical skills that will support her future career in engineering.

“We have robots on the shop floor, and I’m involved with programming these to ensure they operate correctly.”

A fantastic example of how apprenticeships provide real-world experience, responsibility, and opportunities.

We’re excited to be launching Engineering Her Way a new skills forum led by Tyne North Training focused on increasing the number of women entering and succeeding in engineering apprenticeships across the Northeast.

This initiative brings together local employers to have open, honest conversations about the challenges we face, while sharing practical ideas and real solutions to improve engagement, application rates, and long-term success for female talent in engineering.

We’ll be hosting a series of quarterly sessions, kicking off with our first in June where we will:

🔹 Explore the latest data on female engineering apprentices in the northeast region
🔹 Share insights from our own research (some eye-opening findings)
🔹 Hear from employers already making progress in this space
🔹 Collaborate on tangible actions to drive change

This is about more than a conversation, it’s about inspiring each other to build a more inclusive, diverse future workforce for engineering in the Northeast region.

For more information on the forum and details on how to get involved in the conversation please reach out to [email protected]

Not every career starts with a plan. Some start with a single moment.

For Steven it was his first day on site.

Walking in, not knowing anyone.
Not sure if he'd made the right choice.
Wondering if he’d be able to keep up.

Fast forward 6 months he is…
✔ Running tasks independently
✔ Contributing to real projects
✔ Delivering work to a deadline

No university debt.
No “waiting to start his career.”

Apprenticeships don’t just build skills, they build confidence.

What was the moment that changed your career direction?

The Future of Engineering!

In a recent interview with a prospective apprentice, we were asked: “What skill will matter most for engineers in the next five years?”

It’s a great question, and one that sparked plenty of discussion within our team.

As the industry continues to evolve, we’re keen to hear different perspectives.
What skills do you believe will be most important for the next generation of engineers?

We’d love to hear from employers and industry professionals.

The apprentices who stand out aren’t always the most experienced.

They just do a few things differently:

• They ask questions early (not when it’s too late)
• They stay off their phones! (key)
• They want to learn and improve

It sounds simple, but most people don’t do it consistently.
Skill gets you in the door.
Attitude decides how far you go.

If you're starting out as an apprentice this year, focus on this first.

What would you add to the list?

8 months ago, Harry
❌ Had never used engineering equipment
❌ Was unsure what career path to take
❌ Lacked confidence speaking up

Today
✔️ He is working hands-on in a real environment for Baker Hughes
✔️ Is learning technical skills every day
✔️ Is asking questions, solving problems, and growing fast

This is what an apprenticeship looks like, not instant success but progress.

At Tyne North Training, we don’t expect perfection we build it over time.

Thinking about starting a career in engineering? Now’s the time, applications for our September intake are still open.

Thinking about an engineering apprenticeship for your child?

Here’s what every parent should know:

🔧 It’s not a backup to university, it’s a direct route into a skilled, respected career

💷 They earn while they learn (no student debt)

🏗️ Real hands-on experience from day one

📈 Clear progression into senior roles over time

🎓 Many of our employers invest in further qualifications supporting apprentices through higher-level training, HNCs, HNDs, and even degrees while they work

Most importantly, apprenticeships build confidence, independence, and real-world skills early.

Got questions as a parent? Drop us a message and we can set up a call or meeting to discuss further.
