Framing Disaster Risk Perception and Vulnerability in Social Media Communication: A Literature Review 27/07/2022

We are happy to inform that our publication entitled ‘Framing disaster risk perception and vulnerability in social media communication: a literature review’ has been published on Sustainability (free access here: https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/14/15/9148) LINKS EU Project

Framing Disaster Risk Perception and Vulnerability in Social Media Communication: A Literature Review The paper presents the results of a literature review on how social media can impact on disaster risk perception and vulnerability and how these two aspects are interconnected, trying to understand what factors have consequences especially on informational vulnerability. The paper answers to the inc...

Last week we participated to the conference SSPCR host by EURAC on Smart and sustainable cities and regions. In particular we presented a work entitled ‘The coast isn’t clear: climate justice implications of communicating urban flood risk in affluent vulnerable communities’ as part of the special event ‘Climate justice in future cities: geographical perspectives for inclusive urban resilience and adaptation’ promoted by Centre of excellence on climate justice of the University of Padova. The work was the result of a joint effort among University College of Copenhagen, University of Copenhagen and Università degli Studi di Firenze. LINKS EU Project

Today our team is participating to the conference 'Geography and Technology' organized by Società di studi geografici and taking place in Pisa. The presentation is entitled: Alternative or complementary? A critical mapping of the practices of crowdsourcing to respond to emergencies in Italy. It is one of the topics we discuss in the LINKS EU Project. Here Olga presenting to the conference

Abbiamo partecipato agli Accessibility Days con un workshop su come migliorare l’accessibilità della comunicazione nelle emergenze per il progetto H2020 LINKS

Last Friday our partners and have conducted the workshop "Designing inclusive interactive solutions for the communication in disaster situation" within the 2022 event.
A good occasion to discuss with designers, developers, and communication experts about user needs and requirements to create accessible solutions to be used in disaster situations.

How to identify groups? Who can be defined as “vulnerable”? How and impact on and ? What are the main challenges to , and that affect today information flow in disasters? These are the starting questions used to build the Disaster Risk Perception and Vulnerability (DRPV) methodology (deliverable 2.3 of LINKS) developed by Università degli Studi di Firenze
The provides information on the research questions to investigate, the methods to use, and how to select and recruit research participants. Its main purpose is to understand how an improvement in knowledge on social vulnerability and disaster risk perception can contribute to strengthening societal resilience, exploring how the use of social media and crowdsourcing can be made more effective in all the phases of the disaster risk management cycle.
What is new in this approach is that social vulnerability and disaster risk perception are investigated together, focusing on the way they are related. Our premise is that vulnerability and risk perception are two strongly interdependent concepts and further dimensions of interaction emerge when also considering the digital environment. Now, few works that study both the concepts have been provided in the scientific literature, especially considering social media and crowdsourcing.
This methodology must be read in relation to the other two methodologies built by the LINKS project and presented in D3.2 and D4.2, to which this contributes by providing a specific social perspective.

“What makes people vulnerable in disasters?” This question is at the basis of the LINKS deliverable 2.1., developed by Università degli Studi di Firenze.
In recent years, disaster studies literature has increasingly recognized vulnerability as a dynamic condition. This dynamicity is based on the idea that a disaster can simultaneously produce experiences of vulnerability and resilience and that a contextual analysis of the ways in which they interact is needed. However, another point is here considered: recently and have acquired an increasing role in disaster risk management and how this process impacts on needs to be in depth studied.
With the aim to answer to this point and based on the literature review carried out, an interpretative framework for social vulnerability, based on four dimensions, has been provided. , , and are used to discuss vulnerability in relation to the digital space and to identify potentials and challenges of the use of these platforms in disasters.
As result of this analysis, most of the studies highlight both positive and negative consequences. In particular, the use of social media and crowdsourcing as information and communication tools is usually associated to an increase of social and geographical disparities, and consequently to a reduction in people capacity to deal with disasters. On the other hand, social media and crowdsourcing platforms could become an important space where people could obtain more visibility highlighting their needs and capacities and reduce distances promoting collaboration and spontaneous collective initiatives.
Accordingly, the purpose of this deliverable was to build the basis for the research work that will be finalized to produce a tool that can guide people in a more effective use of social media and crowdsourcing in disasters.

Progetto europeo Horizon 2020 "LINKS Strengthening links between technologies and society for European disaster resilience”
