Have you been to the Laing Art Gallery recently? Did you know a group of our staff and students have developed a new tour of some of their most celebrated exhibits?

The self-guided tour invites visitors to uncover ecological themes and issues in the selected work from the Gallery’s collection.

It gives an insight into the industrial history of Newcastle and its environmental impacts and many of the works are from artists with connections to Newcastle and the wider North East.

Congratulations to Daniel Hind, whose poetry collection has won the international UNESCO Bridges of Struga Award 2026 from Struga Poetry Evenings! 👏

Daniel studied for his Undergraduate degree in English Literature and an MA in English Literature 1500-1900 here and is now part of the Research and Innovation team as our Research Integrity Project Officer.

His award-winning collection of poetry, titled New Famous Phrases and published by Broken Sleep Books, responds to and creates new works from past mythologies, folklore, and the work of other writers.

This is only the second time an English poet has won the award, which is bestowed by UNESCO and Struga Poetry Evenings upon the best debut poetry collection internationally.

Congratulations, Daniel!

A £1.25 million grant from the Wolfson Foundation has brought us a significant step closer to the creation of the Sir Bobby Robson Institute - a centre that will allow us to deliver more clinical trials to benefit cancer patients, offering hope to those in the North East and further afield.

The major fundraising boost will help towards developing the £30 million purpose-built cancer clinical trials centre with The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at the Freeman Hospital.
