FAQ #1: Who are you to teach me acting?
It’s a great question, and one you should ask! I believe you should always ask the following three questions:
Where did you train?
What do you teach?
What is your industry experience?
My Recent Castings:
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾, Television, Big Talk Studios Ltd for BBC
MacDonald, Film, Digital Fire Ltd
My Training:
I graduated BA Hons Theatre: Acting, Bretton Hall. I went to London, got an agent, few years later ran out of money! I retrained to teach Secondary English, spending 10 years specialising in behaviour intervention and mental health support.
5 years ago I returned to acting and needed a refresh…
- I studied an intensive RADA Stanislavski’s ‘Theory of Physical Action’ Shakespeare course delivered by the wonderful Brigid Panet (if you don’t know her, you should!)
- I completed the 6 week RCS Summer Acting Intensive: Stage & Screen
- I benefitted from the excellent tuition of Kat Hicks at Guildhall
- I enjoyed the incredible Screen Acting Intensive at Oxford School of Drama - if you get chance, train there, no question - outstanding!
My Teaching:
Firstly, there is no single technique for acting, anyone who says so is trying to sell you something.
As Tom Hardy so perfectly explains: “There’s only two types of acting: convincing and unconvincing.” We focus on the former.
Since training with Brigid Panet at RADA, I’ve been lucky enough to be mentored by her. If I’m leading a session at Creative State Acting (the name itself is hers) it will likely be an exercise from Brigid - she’s very, very good!
Finally, I’d like to clarify this is an acting group, not a school, so we work together as a collective sharing best practice and techniques that work in the industry. We all share, we all support, we all develop.
If you’ve read this far then your dedicated and thorough and we’ll probably work well together - Come play at Creative State Acting.
