Are you a teacher wanting to leave the classroom? Or maybe a teacher wanting to earn a side income? Are you keen to develop ‘expert’ status by writing books in your subject area? Then this is the course for you.

I have been writing educational books for more than 25 years and have written hundreds of titles for publishers such as Harper Collins, Hatchette, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, A and C Black and more. I have written many series of non-fiction books used by schools and libraries worldwide and I have been a features writer for TES.

Finding new ways to present information to learners is what made us become teachers in the first place – and writing educational books is a way to make exciting concepts come to life!
This 6-session course will help you to identify your expertise and find your niche. It will reveal the inside story of the educational and non-fiction publishing world in its many forms and will help you to understand what educational publishers are looking for.

The course will give you the opportunity to look at successfully commissioned educational and non-fiction book and series proposals. We’ll discuss the way educational publishing ‘works’ – who does what and what will be expected of you.

We’ll look at a variety of different markets for your work, from writing for book packagers and publishers, to writing for apps. We’ll also discuss writing content and materials for websites such as charities and public bodies and writing educational resource packs. We will discuss how to monetise the resources you have already spent hours creating.

You’ll learn how to generate concepts, formulate proposals, create page plans and how to write engaging cover letters to send to packagers and publishers. I will also give you one to one feedback on your own book plans.

This course is taught online, live on Zoom and supported by course materials emailed to you directly session by session. Some of these will be videos; others will be printable exercises. During the live sessions there will be presentations, discussions, time for questions and exercises to complete. The structure of the course makes it easier to fit into a busy teaching life. The course is capped at 12 attendees per round to ensure that everyone gets individual attention and in-depth feedback.

All sessions are 10.30-1pm with a ten minute ‘comfort break.’
Saturday 14th January: Session 1: An introduction to the world of educational and non-fiction publishing. What’s out there? What’s the difference between book packagers and publishers? We’ll look at the different projects that need a never-ending supply of educational writers, from home learning activity books, schemes for schools and non-fiction for the schools and libraries market. In this session you’ll be encouraged to identify your strengths and find your niche - and think about what you would like to write. We’ll use real life examples of projects I’ve worked on as author or editor to scaffold your learning; it’s easier to see what ‘works’ when you have an example to work from. We’ll look at examples of a range of books and find out what makes them ‘tick.’

Saturday 28th January: Session 2: An introduction to writing ‘Learning at Home’ resources – also often used by schools as learning aids for homework. We’ll look at structure and set up and features commonly used in home learning books. We’ll discuss concepts, page plans, approaches and what publishers are looking for. You’ll start working up a plan for your own ‘Learning at Home’ resource, which you will complete for ‘homework,’ and I’ll give you 1 to 1 written feedback.

Saturday 11th February: Session 3: Writing non-fiction for schools and libraries Part 1. These full colour hardback books can be valuable in terms of raising your profile as both a writer and ‘educational expert’ and can be used as a vehicle for creating workshops for schools and museums/attractions, should you leave full time teaching.

Saturday 25th February: Session 4: Writing non-fiction for schools and libraries Part 2 - working up a plan for your own non-fiction title. We’ll once again discuss concepts, page plans, approaches and what publishers are looking for. For ‘homework’ you’ll complete a mock up your own concept and book plan and I’ll give you written 1 to 1 feedback.

Saturday 11th March: Session 5: Writing a cover letter that will grab a publisher’s attention – why should they commission you? I’ll share my own successful cover letters, showing you how to tailor them for different projects and publishers.

Saturday 25th March: Session 6: The business of educational writing: Creating a professional ‘platform’ for yourself. We’ll look at how market yourself to publishers and how to showcase your work. We’ll discuss the types of contracts you may be offered and pitfalls to look out for. We’ll also discuss organisations (such as NAWE), and bodies to register with (ALCS and PLR – a useful passive income stream for authors).

Course Fee: £250 payable in advance, or an option to pay in 3 instalments of £85, by arrangement.

If you prefer, this course is also available in an intensive weekend on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February, 10am-4pm each day. If you book this option, all materials will be sent out in advance, and written feedback for your completed work will still be given.

Course Fee: £240 payable in advance, or an option to pay in 3 instalments of £80 before the course begins, by arrangement.
