A world-first: a vinyl record embedded with coal dust. (And some behind the scenes snaps of yours truly going inside the mine to record some IR sweeps!)
Meet Ancestral Reverb — a haunting musical journey through 100+ years of mining
heritage, memory & community. The past we inherit, the future we build
https://threadsintheground.bandcamp.com/album/ancestral-reverb
What’s thought to be a world-first - a vinyl record embedded with coal dust - launches at a landmark renewable energy transition conference [3-4 November] at the newly-restored Pitman’s Parliament in Durham.
The 20-minute musical track, Ancestral Reverb, uses colliery music spanning over 100 years, and the verbatim words of coal miners and their families.
As well as being produced literally with coal dust embedded into the vinyl, Ancestral Reverb features the ‘sound of carbon’ as musicians journeyed down an old drift coal mine at Beamish Colliery to digitally capture the ‘reverb’ of the mine, used in the track.
The evocative piece has been dubbed as ‘Moby meets Brassed Off’ as the track features spoken word, colliery bands, and electronica.

Finally the new music from The Slowlight Quartet is here!
I'm really proud of this, because as always, when the musicians are absolutely phenomenal and the songwriting is incredible, it makes us all sound like total legends. I also really fu***ng love the arrangement of this first track, especially the payoff... You're not getting that snare until the last chorus, but it's such a good song you don't even notice. Unless I just tell you. Like now. The tracks were 99% recorded at Cupola studios, the same room where I did my degree recording. It all comes back full circle sometimes.
Enjoy!

I've also attached below, an exclusive behind the scenes image... the preamps used for the recording 😅 That's right, a rack of ADA8200.... still, after years and years. I still see people worrying about "what preamp". My dude, no one fu***ng cares about your preamps. It's also the only photo I took during the two day session. I'm especially tragic at social media.

🎺 With our full 18-piece big band, we tell the story of jazz, swing, and big band history from its inception to the present day, showcasing music by some of the most popular, groundbreaking and adventurous musicians in history.
🔥 The development of big band jazz was not an easy journey—its story is fraught with racial inequality, gender stereotyping, and harsh realities. However, the music that was created lives on as a testament to those who helped forge it, and remains just as relevant today as ever.
💪 From the cotton plantations of the Deep South to blockbuster film soundtracks - big bands have survived everything from financial depressions, world wars, pop-mania, and technological advances.
🎷 Time After Time shines a spotlight on jazz's most iconic names and will bring you all the way to the big band music of 2025...
🎵 Featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Dinah Washington, Maynard Ferguson, Sarah Vaughan, the Rat Pack, Buddy Rich, Gordon Goodwin, Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles), WDR Big Band, and many more...

Well, it gives me great pleasure to finally have this one in my hand. The last of three mega recording projects with Strictly Smokin' Big Band . Arranged by the G himself Michael Lamb, and containing tonnes of special guests from all over the UK, it was quite a mammoth undertaking on all fronts. We recorded it in a single day (sans guests) at Simpson Street Studios through an old cadac desk which was full of character. And fans... Those things run hot! 3 years later, finally all that effort and work is physical.
What's even more special though is they've managed to pull together 3 of the amazing guest players to play with them at The Fire Station this Friday. So head on down and hear the music in the flesh. Yeah, I loved recording it, but the real power of a big band has to be felt to be believed!

Great to finally see this one out in the wild... sat in my "2021" folder for a long time... Feels like an eternity ago.... Engineered by myself at Simpson Street Studios through an old crazy Cadac desk... a desk which needed fans to cool between takes.... I'll stick to ITB 😂
Guests all recorded remotely, and then painstakingly mixed by Michael Lamb and myself for your listening pleasure
