Julie Trimble is the lead SLT for acute stroke at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. She is researching the use of cough reflex testing (CRT) as a possible aid to identifying acute stroke patients who are at risk of silent aspiration. The research is being funded by NIHR in conjunction with Sheffield Hallam University as part of their clinical academic internship with supervision from our lecturer Nicole Lallini.

Clients from the Tavistock Aphasia Centre have worked to produce this leaflet about Aphasia and presented it to BSc2 students on Friday. This was a fantastic opportunity for the BSc2 students to meet clients and ask questions in preparation for their client placement in the Tavistock Aphasia Centre, which begins in January.

Today, three of our final year SLS undergraduates will be showcasing their Summer Research Projects at the Great North Museum from 4.15pm.
We would like to extend a huge congratulations and well done for all their hard work.
Here's an overview of what their projects included:

*Story telling after right-sided stroke: Using real-time speech measures to identify the deficit. (Laura Chambers)

Last night some of our students were lucky enough to attend the 7th annual Head and Neck Cancer Conference. It was inspiring, informative and insightful for developing SLTs. Thank you to the professional speakers and patients. You were all incredible.

Today is World Stroke Day. Did you know there are approximately 152,000 strokes every year in the UK, around 1/3 of stroke survivors are left with a communication impairment and 40% will have an initial swallowing impairment!

Our new SLS seminar series starts again tomorrow. At the university we invite guest speakers to present their current research to us.
Tomorrow at 4pm - 5pm in LT5 KGVI building Patti Adank, from UCL will present research entitled "Automatic imitation of speech: investigating mechanisms governing perception-production links"
