🎉 Alumni Spotlight | Frankie O’Reilly 📚
We’re proud to celebrate Northumbria University alum Frankie O’Reilly, whose journey from PGCE student to published educational author continues to inspire across the region.
Frankie graduated from Northumbria University with a PGCE in 2012 and has since built an incredible career in education. She is currently Deputy Head Teacher, SENDCo, Mental Health Lead and PSHE Lead at Heddon-on-the-Wall St. Andrew’s Primary School, where she combines leadership with a passion for literacy, creativity and pupil wellbeing.
In April 2026, Frankie became co-author of *100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Poetry* (Bloomsbury Education) — a practical guide designed to help teachers bring poetry to life in fun, engaging and accessible ways.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the book, Frankie said:
“Poetry shouldn’t be a daunting task locked behind complex metaphors; it should be a playground for expression.”
Alongside her work in schools, Frankie is also the author of *The Boy with his Head Stuck in a Book* (2017) and has contributed to *Modelling Exciting Writing* (2018 & 2022). Her creative writing has also received national recognition, including a YA novel long-listed for a Novel Opening and Synopsis Award.
Reflecting on her career so far, Frankie encourages future teachers to remain curious, embrace their passions and remember that teaching can open doors to many exciting opportunities beyond the classroom.
Congratulations, Frankie — we’re delighted to celebrate your success and look forward to seeing what comes next 👏💙

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2026 Vaughan Oliver Graphic Design Scholarship! 🎨
✨ Jack Sinclair
✨ Alice Evangelica Heryanto
✨ Erin Dinsmore
Vaughan Oliver was one of the most iconic British graphic designers of his generation and a Northumbria graduate. His sleeve work for 4AD artists including Pixies, Cocteau Twins and The Breeders became, in the words of The Guardian, "some of the most revered in modern pop."
The scholarship, founded in partnership with 4AD and Lee Oliver Widdows, honours his legacy by supporting the next generation of creative talent right here at Northumbria.
Huge thanks to 4AD and Lee for continuing to champion our students. 💙

What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon in New York ⚽🗽
Northumbria graduates came together at Peter Dillon’s to watch Newcastle United take on West Ham and the lads delivered 🖤🤍
With a brilliant result on the pitch and great company off it, there was plenty for Newcastle fans to celebrate. It was fantastic to see alumni reconnecting, sharing stories, and enjoying the match together in the heart of the Big Apple 🍎
This may only have been our second alumni social in New York, but it is already starting to feel like a tradition in the making.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a brilliant atmosphere throughout the afternoon 🍻
