Back from two inspiring days of fieldwork at the former Crichton Royal Asylum in Dumfries — walking the estate, visiting buildings, and learning about the layered histories and reuses of this remarkable site. Warmest thanks to Jennifer Challinor - The Crichton Trust - for her hospitality, and to h...

A sunny day for a great History Walk at Bethlem Royal Hospital, organised by Bethlem Museum of the Mind. A truly inspiring experience — which I personalised with a stop at the old Bethlem Archives and Museum’s building 33. 🙏 Thanks to the great volunteers and staff who led the walk!

We are back!

Thanks to the generous support of The British Academy and The Leverhulme Trust, over the next year and a half I will be continuing my research on former asylums—their reuse, processes of memorialisation, and the development of “mind museums.”

We begin this week with fieldwork at the Bethlem Museum of the Mind.

More to follow soon!

Yesterday we had the the pleasure of hosting a celebration event to mark 'City in a Citadel', the first solo by local artist and expert by experience R.R.

Many of the people who turned out to support R.R. are South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust staff who were part of the care team that helped on his journey through in-patient services.

R.R. spoke to those gathered about the staff who helped introduce him to and , and the lifeline these creative activities became.

You can find 'City in a Citadel' on now until the end of May at the Mental Health Museum.

I’m delighted to share that I’ve been awarded by The British Academy a BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant. 🤍
My study investigates the cultural significance of the heritage of mental health, Mind Museums, and their role in challenging stigma and promoting reflectivity on mental health.

The funding will support fieldwork across the UK, a Knowledge Exchange Workshop at the MUSEO LABORATORIO DELLA MENTE, writing and networking, building on research I began within the ReMIND project in 2019.

I’m grateful to Northumbria University for the support through my sabbatical and institutional funds, and excited for the synergies this work creates with CA22159 Euro Hist Health project and the collaboration with UK Mind Museums.

Soon more news!

Had a great visit to the Southwell Workhouse on Thursday with the Museum and Heritage working group of the COST Action EuroHealthHist. The Workhouse and Infirmary is one of the founding members of International Coalition of Sites of Conscience and a great example of how such historical architectural complexes are palimpsests of tangible and intangible heritage, as well as the different approaches to their conservation and public representation.
