Hi, and welcome to VICI Language Dynamics – we exist to help businesses communicate better, using language coaching to bridge the gaps between staff, suppliers and customers. s, staff and suppliers in their own language, you’re in the right place. At VICI, we’ve been helping businesses improve their language skills for over 20 years, working with organisations big and small on whatever matters most to them. During the years we've been running VICI Language Dynamics, we’ve worked with scores of bilingual businesses.

All of them had one thing in common: a goal to improve the way they ran, especially in the way they dealt with the multiple languages needed to run the businesses successfully.

We’ve distilled all of that experience down into the five things that businesses need to focus on when building a bilingual business – We hope you find it useful!

Over the last few days, we’ve been distilling all of our experience with international businesses down into the 5️⃣ things that businesses need to focus on when building a bilingual business.

Here is our last step and today is about 💥 Leadership 💥

One of the things we’re seeing more and more of is organisations recognising that their high-level employees don’t have a leadership problem, they actually have a language problem.

▶️ Often a company will have promoted someone who doesn’t speak English 🇬🇧 as their first language, or hired someone for a leadership position, and then had concerns about their ability to lead.

▶️ They might know their role like the back of their hand, but when it comes to speaking in front of others, or presenting their ideas to an audience, they fail to do that with confidence and charisma.

We've come across two different examples lately:

🌍 A Finance Director in the UK 🇬🇧

🌍 A Marketing Manager in France 🇫🇷

Both excellent in their roles yet clearly lacking confidence when it came to leading their team, presenting projects etc.

Originally identified as a gap in their leadership skills (one of them had done a 6-month programme on the subject) it was later discovered that, when asked to "perform' in their mother tongue, the result was somewhat very different and without a trace of timidity or hesitance!

The reality is that it’s rarely a leadership problem, and more often the fact that they’re either not confident enough to lead in what isn’t their mother tongue, or they simply need to be up-skilled to speak with more fluency in that environment.

This morning, we’re talking about again, focusing on ▶️ Hiring.

So here’s Part 4️⃣

💫 Hiring.

This is where it all starts.

Get things right from the beginning, and you’ve got a good chance of a successful bilingual business.

We recommend that companies hiring foreign staff get them an objective language assessment, that gives you an impartial, definitive assessment of just how proficient they are.

⬇️

https://www.vicilanguagedynamics.com/language-testing-and-exams/

This might not be the difference between hiring them or not, but it will give you absolute clarity on whether they need help to improve or not.

Once you’ve hired them, identifying the training they need, whether it’s language training, cultural training or a bit of both, ensures that they have a pathway to progression, rather than just stagnating and not doing their role as effectively as you need them to.

Part 3️⃣ • talking about Legality.

First, a disclaimer: we’re not ❌ solicitors, and this does not constitute legal advice.

🖌 The law varies from country to country, and in order to create and run a company that is legal and compliant, you need advice from someone that understand the intricacies of what you can and can’t do.

✒️ This is also true when you’re hiring foreign staff to work in your country.

Ensuring they understand the specifics of the law in your country is imperative, especially in areas like HR and health and safety.

Successful bilingual businesses will have a system to ensure that every staff member is educated in these areas from day one.

🖌 Similarly, if your website operates in different languages, it’s crucial to consider whether there are online regulations in that country that you don’t know about, and whether it’s being translated by someone that understands the cultural differences between the two countries too.

So much to think about! 🤯

The legalities around an 🌍 international project 🌍is not something we specialise in but having done it in France 🇫🇷 and the UK 🇬🇧 if we can point you in the right direction, we will.

Part 2️⃣ of talking about bilingual businesses.

💫Today is about Culture 💫

On the face of it, modern culture seems quite similar all over the globe. We’ve all got smartphones, Netflix and Spotify, and as a result it can be easy to think that you don’t need to worry about culture.

That would be a mistake. ❌

The truth is that even between England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and France 🇫🇷, there are areas where culture is very different indeed, and being sensitive to those difference is one of the keys to successful international collaboration.

☑️ For example, in some countries, it’s absolutely fine to talk about money. In others, it’s totally frowned upon.

☑️ Some nationalities are more direct, some are more withdrawn.

☑️ Some countries have specific practices that must be respected (like the Spanish siesta), while others have absolute “no-nos” that simply shouldn’t happen.

☑️ Greeting men and women in some countries has to be done differently.

Notes from Nathalie Danon, our Director:

“I remember my early days in an international firm when, to try and impress a potential new French client, top executives had prepared a high-quality presentation. Then, at lunchtime, brought in the cheap club sandwich-crips combo. Not the ideal lunch when a sausage + mash + pint at the local pub wouldn't made a great impression to immerse the French hosts into British culture, which I know they would have loved!”

➡️ If your business is operating across more than one country or nationality, getting a handle on the culture across those different countries 🌍 or nationalities is critical.

During the years we’ve been running VICI Language Dynamics, we’ve worked with scores of bilingual businesses.

All of them had one thing in common ↙️

💥 A goal to improve the way they ran, especially in the way they dealt with the multiple languages needed to run the businesses successfully. 💥

We’ve distilled all of that experience down into the 5️⃣ things that businesses need to focus on when building a bilingual business.

We hope you find it useful!

Let's start today with 💫 Communication 💫:

Nothing happens without communication, yet that so many businesses take it for granted.

The truth is that when there are multiple languages in your business, whether that’s team members who speak different languages, customers or suppliers, there are several layers of complexity added into the way your business runs.

If you don’t recognise that, that’s when the trouble starts. ❌

🤔 And a key thing to remember when it comes to communication is that people don’t just need to be able to communicate about business stuff.

🤔 They also need to be able to joke in the kitchen and spend time in the pub together – that’s how strong relationships are built; relationships that improve the running of your organisation.

▶️ We had a client who came to us with a very good standard of professional English.

She was an HR assistant from Romania, and she’d lived in the UK for 13 years. She was great at her job but recognised that she wasn’t fluent enough when it came to colloquial English, which made it hard for her to build relationships with her co-worker.

By working with us, she was able to hold her own in the pub, join in with the jokes, and integrate better into the business.

▶️ It’s not just staff either – another one of our clients is based in the UK, but ships out to Spain and Italy.

Prior to working with us they’d had consistent problems with the wrong things being shipped out, and the reason was entirely down to the language barrier.

There are plenty more stories where those came from, but the key takeaway is simple:
💫 communication is key, and understanding exactly where there are breakdowns in your communication will give you the roadmap to improvement.

▶️ Language Assessment ◀️

A lady came to us last week, wanting to brush up on her Spanish for work.

She wasn’t a complete novice – she had a Spanish colleague who’d been teaching her for a few weeks, and she was using one of the apps too.

However, she’d realised that although her colleague was native, that didn’t mean she was good at coaching her.

So it was time to enlist the help of a professional.

First things first though, we needed to understand what level she was actually at, so we suggested a Language Assessment; in just 30 minutes, your answers whizz their way to a human who marks it all, and gives you a score.

So that’s what she did. But when the score came back, it didn’t make for pretty reading – she scored 0%.

It’s easy to think that if you know some vocab' that you can “get by”, but what a language assessment does is give you complete clarity on just how well you’d actually get on conversing with people and living life in another language.

And what this lady’s assessment showed is that there was serious work to be done, so now she’s enrolled in a programme with us.

If you’re interested to know what level your language skills are on, just get in touch with us today.

This can be arranged in less than 2 hours:

We’ve worked with a lot of businesses over the years, and one thing is true about every single one of them:

They all want their staff to be able to converse in more than one language. 🌍

For multi-national companies to really thrive, having the ability to communicate in the different nations where they operate is really important, and that’s where we help – delivering bespoke coaching to their staff to help them achieve exactly that.

But for many, there’s a significant barrier: it takes a long time.

We all know you can’t learn a language overnight, and consequently lots of employers are concerned about that training their staff in a new language will cost the earth.

▶️ And that’s why we often recommend a proper language assessment as the essential first step.

▶️ For under £50, you can secure a full online assessment that delivers you a result within 24 hours.

It’s not a computer-assessed test computer – there’s a human marking all then answers, and because it uses facial recognition software, you can be certain that the right person is taking the test.

Following the test, you’ll get a formal certificate, detailing exactly what level of your employee is at, allowing you to make the right decisions about their training.

If that sounds good to you, just get in touch today
