Progress comes from understanding what you’re working on — and why. ⛳️

A year into coaching and it’s brilliant to hear how much the game has improved.

For me, good coaching isn’t just about changing a golf swing. It’s about explaining things clearly, finding what clicks for the individual and then helping them take those changes onto the golf course.

That’s where the on-course work and game-management side becomes so valuable too.

Trying to make a swing change stick? 🎯

Sometimes the problem isn’t what you’re working on… it’s how you’re practising it.

PURPOSEFUL PRACTICE 🎯

This video isn’t in slow motion 😂

• Slow, deliberate rehearsals
• Exaggerate the movement if needed
• Pause in your new position
• Give yourself time to actually feel the change
• Recognise the difference between old & new positions
• Remember — feel and real aren’t always the same
• Then gradually start to add speed

Sometimes you have to slow it down before you can speed it up.

Use the practice environment first — no score, no consequence, no pressure.

Take the outcome away and focus on learning the new movement.

And remember: feel and real aren’t always the same.

Imagine doing this for 10 minutes a day — in the garden, on your lunch break, wherever.

Not all practice has to involve hitting balls. A few minutes of really purposeful rehearsal every day can be far more valuable than mindlessly hitting bucket after bucket.

Practice smart. ⛳️

Sometimes the flag isn’t the target. 🎯⛳️

Play the 1st at Donnington Grove with me.

381-yard Par 4. Slight dogleg right, blind tee shot with a fairway that slopes left.

Firm, fast conditions with the wind slightly down and off the right.

5 iron from the tee — good strike, but completely the wrong line. Started it too far left and finished around 220 yards from the tee.

That left a much more interesting second shot.

147 yards to the flag.
127 yards to the front.

But the yardage was only part of the decision.

Ball sitting in the first cut with the potential for a flyer.
Ball above my feet.
Downwind.
Flag tucked in the back-right corner.
And long or right of this green is not where I want to be.

So I wasn’t trying to hit a 147-yard shot directly at the flag.

I went with PW, aimed safely left and looked to pitch it towards the front of the green, knowing the lie, wind and firm conditions should help it release.

It did exactly that.

Pin high, around 30–35ft left. Two putts. Par. 👍🏻

Good course management isn’t always about how close you can hit it. Sometimes it’s recognising where you DON’T want to miss and choosing your target accordingly.

Not every flag needs attacking. ⛳️

Play the 8th at Newbury & Crookham - brutally tough but great hole ⛳️

426 yards, Par 4 — uphill, dogleg left and definitely playing longer than the number on the card.

Add a wind slightly into and off the right and this hole gets your attention from the first shot.

OB all down the right, trouble left and a ditch around 260–270 yards before the hole turns and climbs towards the green.

I went with 3 wood. With the OB right I didn’t want to start it too far down that side and rely on the wind bringing it back, so started it more down the middle.

Hit it pretty well, but the wind moved it slightly further left than expected and instead of catching the slope back towards the fairway, it stayed up in the rough.

Good shot. Difficult outcome.

Now the hole completely changes.

I could chip sideways and accept a long third. Going for the green from there wasn’t realistically an option.

So I chose something in between.

I had around 140–145 yards to get over the trees and into a good lay-up area. 9 iron gave me enough loft and it was a shot I felt I could execute.

Over the trees. Back into position. About 40 yards left.

A good 54° left around 5 feet and I managed to hole it.

Hard-fought par. ✅

Would I have been disappointed with five after where the tee shot finished? Not really.

But you’re always one good shot away from changing the hole.

Course management isn’t about playing every hole perfectly. When you get out of position, assess the situation, understand the risk and find the shot that gives you the best chance of getting back into the hole.

Sometimes a good score is less about avoiding mistakes and more about what you do after them. ⛳️
