We have been talking all about the Sola eclipse today.
An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon moves directly between the Sun and the Earth.

We gathered in the fire circle to toast pancakes over the fire, accompanied by refreshing cold juice, setting a lovely, relaxed tone for our final day.

The mud kitchen was a hive of activity as we swapped our usual water play for a pizza-making theme. Using rolling pins, knives, and chopping boards, the children crafted imaginative "pizzas" topped with dried leaves, pasta, and pinecones. It was a great change of pace that kept everyone thoroughly engaged.

In the willow dome, we kept a tuff tray of bubbly water equipped with pots and pans. This provided a perfect opportunity for the children to cool down and practice their pouring skills, which remains a firm favourite amongst our younger participants.

The hammock was set up for some well-deserved relaxation time. We also held an animal hunt, where I had hidden various fluffy toy animals around the site. The children loved searching for them, choosing to either re-hide them for friends or collect them in a basket. We managed to gather almost everyone, though I suspect one may still be "hibernating" until we return in September!

Our Hapa Zome focused on the art of flower bashing. The children used a beautiful variety of foliage, ferns, and rose petals - including some leaves already turning lovely autumnal shades of orange and red-to create stunning prints on cotton wax strips

To mark the special occasion for those leaving for school, I prepared a "treasure hunt" using mushrooms created from precious stones, hidden in a container of sand, water, and mud. The children used sieves to pan for their treasure. Once found, they washed and dried their mushrooms with soapy water and placed them in organza bags to take home as a special keepsake of their time at Forest School.

After a group tidy-up, we headed to the field for a game of "drip, drip, drop." It was a fantastic way to end the session, using water play to keep us all cool and laughing.

Todayโ€™s session was fantastic and filled with excitement! We kicked things off at the fire circle, where we enjoyed a cosy fire and toasted some delicious sโ€™mores. The children loved having their marshmallows roasted and sandwiched between two cookies - what a delightful treat! Last week, we couldnโ€™t have a fire due to the heat, so it felt wonderful to gather around it again and practice our fire skills safely.

Our tasks for the day included splitting wood using the wood splitter. The children learned that this wood would be essential for our fire next week, which gave them a sense of purpose in their work. It was great to see them understand the importance of their efforts.

We also explored some whittling with willow. I had cut some willow branches, and the children used peelers to whittle them down. They then added feathers and pipe cleaners to create their unique designs, which they absolutely adored. Each one turned out differently, showcasing the skills they picked up today.

In addition to all that, we had a fun activity in the mud kitchen with leftover willow leaves and water, which the toddlers and babies always enjoy. We also set up an ice cream station made from sand, complete with colourful scoops, spoons, and tubs with little sticks. The children had a blast pretending to scoop and serve ice cream, immersing themselves in imaginative play.

After a lively session filled with learning and creativity, we wrapped up with a group tidy-up. To finish off the day, we had a burst of energy on the field, making it a perfect end to a wonderful session!

Today was definitely a warm one, and we made adjustments to our session to ensure that the children and staff were both safe and comfortable. We created cosy spots beneath the trees to help everyone stay cool.

Water play was a big hit, with plenty of buckets for the children to kick off their shoes and wade into to cool off. We also had sponges that absorbed water for the children to squeeze and refresh themselves. Additionally, we filled a wheelbarrow with water and used nets for a fun little experiment to see what would float or sink when dropped in. The children enjoyed using some mud kitchen tools, like jugs, to fill from the wheelbarrow and explore.

Todayโ€™s session included making floral crowns, where each child used sweet williams, roses and various foliage to decorate their crowns, which they can assemble later.

We also set up a slack line in the shade between two trees, allowing the children to practice their balance skills, which they absolutely loved. It was a great way for them to build core strength, contributing positively to their physical development.

In the garden area, we maintained our mud kitchen, but this time it was filled with ice. We had frozen balloons filled with water that created large ice balls, which stayed solid longer than regular ice cubes in the heat.

Although we didnโ€™t have a fire today, we still enjoyed a delightful snack of waffles drizzled with honey and even had ice lollies as a special treat to keep us cool, washed down with plenty of juice. It was a wonderful day, a pleasant change from the recent wet weather, and we had an enjoyable morning together.
