Interested in getting into practical work or starting your journey into horology? This hands-on two-day course is the perfect place to start.

Develop essential workshop skills through a practical project, gaining real-world experience you can take straight into your own workshop.

You’ll learn:

Workshop safety and best practice
Correct use and maintenance of hand tools
Basic machinery techniques and maintenance
How to select and use the right tools and techniques
Plus, you’ll complete a practical project that you can take home and use in your own workshop.

The course also supports students working towards the Technician Grade Distance Learning Course (DLC).

GEORGE DANIELS AT 100 ⏱️
This year, we mark 100 years since the birth of George Daniels CBE FBHI.
Watchmaker, educator, author, inventor, restorer, collector and racer, George Daniels was a remarkable character whose work had a lasting impact on horology and the watch industry.
A Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and one of only 12 recipients of the prestigious BHI Gold Medal, he inspired thousands of horologists around the world.
George was also a passionate advocate for education and high standards in watchmaking, helping to shape the future of the profession.
His influence can still be seen today, in the work of watchmakers, the techniques they use and the generations he inspired.
This year, we remember George Daniels at 100 — celebrating an extraordinary life, an extraordinary watchmaker and a legacy that continues to inspire.

🌑☀️ ARE YOU READY FOR TODAY’S SOLAR ECLIPSE?
Something spectacular is happening in UK skies today, 12 August 2026!
Up to 96% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon in a deep partial solar eclipse – the first deep solar eclipse visible from the British Isles since 2015.
And there’s more… just a few hours later, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak, with moonless skies creating potentially brilliant viewing conditions. ✨
First contact – when the Moon begins to cross the Sun – is expected just before 6pm BST.
👓 Remember: never look directly at the Sun. Use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses throughout the eclipse.

From apprentice to Big Ben... learn from the man who did it.
What does it take to become the Clockmaker responsible for "Big Ben"?
For Paul Roberson FBHI, it began with a watchmaking apprenticeship before a career spanning more than 50 years in horology. From working at Fish Brothers and running his own business to becoming Clockmaker at the Palace of Westminster, Paul has built a wealth of technical knowledge and practical experience. Today, he continues to share that expertise as a BHI tutor and Vice President of the Institute.
From 14–17 September, Paul will be teaching our Servicing and Correcting Faults in a Single Train Clock course at Upton Hall.
During this practical four-day course, you'll learn how to:
• Diagnose and correct faults in single train clock movements
• Apply professional servicing techniques
• Build practical skills while preparing for the DLC Level 3 Unit D3 Single Train Clock exam
As Paul says:
"It's amazing to think that I started as an apprentice in a basement and went on to look after 'Big Ben'."

🔧 This Week in the Watch Workshop ⌚

Our Manual Wind Watch – Servicing & Correcting Faults course with John Murphy FBHI is underway, with students developing the practical skills needed to service, diagnose and restore manual wind timepieces to a professional standard.

Throughout the course, participants are learning how to:
🛠️ Confirm and maintain accurate timekeeping tolerances
✅ Carry out quality control checks against industry benchmarks
🔍 Diagnose and correct common faults with confidence

By the end of the course, they'll leave with valuable hands-on experience, increased confidence, and the skills to progress towards higher-level horological examinations and professional accreditation.

Every watch tells a story—and every skilled watchmaker knows how to keep it ticking. ⚙️
