There are 2 main reasons people try hard to avoid 'blowing out' the highlights. The first is about printing because most printers don't have white ink so a blown highlight would just be the paper with no ink. The second is very bright areas draw the attention of the eye first, i don't agree with this 100% of the time but it's often the case...actually another reason is pure white is un-editable, when it's gone, it's gone.

There is a lot we need to think about before releasing the shutter but one thing to consider where blown highlights are concerned is, are you going to crop the final image?? Blowing the highlights in a frame may well mean the area of the shot you are going to keep after cropping is actually exposed appropriately.

If you use a bridge camera & to some extent a mirrorless camera, don't rely on the exposure you see before you take the shot. I did a lesson with a bridge camera yesterday & the exposure shown by the camera was miles away from the actual shot taken. This is why i teach proper metering with all cameras, the meter will show you the truth, you just have to learn how to read it 👍

Again i've recently heard so called experts say " the camera meter gets confused - sometimes you have to argue with the meter" etc etc.

The thing is, it's a computer. It's not something that gets confused or has an opinion you argue with.

The default exposure you get was decided in a factory, NOT while you are taking a shot. SO, if your scene is NOT a mid 'default' exposure, you need to adjust the exposure.

In a nutshell, if your scene has light or dark areas, you will need to adjust because the 'default' exposure won't record the scene as you see it ( in a metering mode that evaluates the whole scene ). It really is as simple as that.

If you believe the meter has an opinion or gets confused, you have no hope of understanding what will happen when you point the camera at a scene.

This is by far the the most common thing beginners don't understand & it's because of these so called experts misleading them.

Grab your phone & turn the camera on, point it to light & dark areas & watch it get lighter when pointing at dark & darker when pointing at light & ask yourself...is it getting confused? do i need to argue with it's opinion? OR is that a default 'mid average of the whole scene' exposure because it's just a computer that has no hope of knowing what scene looks like or how to expose it the same as a human brain & eye can?

Be VERY careful with these 'experts' & other photographers that have 'learned' from these 'experts'. Nonsense is heard & repeated without any real thinking taking place...

Quite often i'm asked if someone's photo is good or not. My response is " did you achieve what you set out to achieve?" If not, there's not really any point asking someone else, they won't know your intentions behind the shot. So your first question is for yourself 👍
