This BCA update is really important if you have never activated your digital account on QMS but do have LCMLA quals or previous training recorded in a paper logbook.

CAVE & MINE LEADER TRAINING
27th to 29th of November 2023
This course will cover the BCA LCMLA cave and mine leader syllabus and is based in the Peak District over 3 consecutive days. The only pre-requisite is that candidates should have some basic personal caving/mining experience and have a desire to lead in those environments.
This course already has bookings and is guaranteed to run. £300pp for the 3 days, access to digital resources and follow-up support towards your assessment. All equipment can be provided if needed. Get in touch if you'd like more info or wish to book a place.

One of the things we looked at on a recent LCMLA Update Workshop was the periodical proof loading of caving belts (see BCA resource on the LCMLA website pages). I showed how easy it was to generate a low but sufficient force to be confident in the belt's strength, and then we went nuts and tried to break some stuff.
The oldest belt I could find held nearly 10kN, although the buckle did bend a bit.

Some new shiny things for caver training arrived this morning.

Vertical Leader Training
9th & 10th of November 2023
I've got someone interested in a VL course in the Peak area on the above dates. £200pp. Get in touch if you're interested and as soon as I have 2 or more confirmed as keen, I'll put the course on.

Some of the contributing factors here are shared with caving use. Worth a read.

Assessing a Mine Leader group day in North Wales today.
There is a new LCMLA Update Workshop date available in the Peak District. This will be run my me at Dukes Barn on the 16th September. Details and booking via the BCA QMS website:
I had a lovely day with a couple of members of the Caving Crew today covering leadership skills and emergency planning. No pics as I forgot the camera, but we had a good root around in Mouldridge and then a bit of damp footed fun in Bagshawe. The last 2 weekends I've worked with members of this club and it's been a genuine pleasure.

SRT and rescue training with the Caving Crew this weekend.

Vertical Mine Leader Group Day assessment today over in sunny N Wales. Cracking view on the walk down.

Dates to come but we're open for private club bookings now.
Cavers Kit Checks workshop (sport & recreation) - This cavers kit checks workshop is aimed at recreational cavers & mine explorers and teaches the methods for checking your own equipment.
Yesterday we found both a caving light and a compass at different ends of the parking area for Giants. If you lost something recently then get in touch and let me know what you're missing.

Woohooo! CIC Mine Trainer/Assessor process completed and all officially rubber stamped. Getting quite the collection of green boxes on my QMS profile now.

Another LCMLA assessment done. Well done ladies!
My next booking this week is a bespoke 2-day LCMLA CPD course for some staff from a North Wales activity centre staying over in the Peak area.

Sooo much LCMLA stuff going on this month. A highlight perhaps will have been the 2 days just spent with these guys over from North Wales doing a bespoke Mine to Cave training in the Peak District. A big jaunt in Peak Cavern on day 1, then some SRT in P8 and a quick fire around the top of Giants Hole on day 2.
I've got a spare day to wash and dry kit tomorrow and then it's onto assessment number 4 on Thursday.

Are you looking for a Cave & Mine Leader training course before the summer season? If so get in touch. I have another interested party and am happy to put a course on if I can get at least 2 people with compatible dates.

Spare Krab checking out an old air compression drill, deep down a Welsh slate mine. Very happy to trade in my grandfather rights Mines trainer/assessor credential for an actual Mines CIC ticket today with Pete Knight and Dave Baines. A top day day out too. Now there’s lots more scope for adventure therapy underground :-)

Yesterday I delivered a radon workshop for the Peak Instructed Caving Affiliation at the Hollowford Centre. I got to have a play with the biggest smart-screen I'd ever seen and catch up with lots of people I'd not seen in ages.

I've had a request to run a North Wales Mine Leader Training sometime in April or May. I'd need at least 2 people to make it happen, so if anyone is keen then please get in touch.
BCA Mine Leader Training is a 2 day course and is a pre-requisite for gaining the Mine Leader Award. The course is £200pp and that covers the 2 days of training, lots of resources for learning, and a little pre-assessment skills check if you want me to do one with you when the time comes.

Just finished 3 days of LCMLA courses up in North Wales. Tyrolean Training, Update Workshop, and Mine Leader assessment. Ace company and some stunning views.
I love this job...
"Feel the course really took my knowledge to the next level in terms of understanding the ropework and it was really well delivered... its clear Pete just enjoys what he does and it comes across well; one of the best training courses ive been on regardless of activity."

Just finished a cracking 3 days of LCMLA Vertical Leader training over in North Wales. I was joined by Arthur and Danny for the full 3-day package, Andy too for day 3, and I was ably assisted throughout by Jen. Excellent company and a real pleasure to deliver.
I'm straight into a private SRT coaching day tomorrow, then it's back to Derbyshire to wash a mountain of kit.

I have 1 remaining place on an LCMLA Tyrolean for Groups training day on Monday the 31st of October. The course will be based in Cwmorthin Slate Mine in North Wales.
£100.00
You must have already completed your normal LCMLA Vertical Leader Training before attending this course if you want it to be recognised by the QMS system. Attending for CPD is totally fine if you don't want the cert.
Ping me a message if you want the place.

Looking for a few guinee pigs for a couple of new courses so that I can check timings and make sure the resources are appropriate. No cost but I will require some genuine feedback (I'll give you some structure). These are aimed at 'work' inspections and not 'sport'. Recreational courses are in development. The two courses are:
Half-day PPE Pre-use Inspections for outdoor instructors
1-day PPE Thorough Inspection & Record Keeping
Mid October or early November ideally. Probably Peak District based but could do in Wales depending on volunteers.
Give me a shout if you're keen and have some dates in that range.

No photos from day 2 of the Vertical Leader course due to me being too busy! Day 3 was the Tyrolean for Groups training and we shot over to North Wales and were joined by a couple more participants.
3 excellent days of technical skills followed by a not-so excellent 2 hours of kit cleaning! I run most of my LCMLA courses on demand, so if you fancy one let me know and we'll get something in the diary.

Vertical Leader training day 1.

I've got an LCMLA Vertical Leader training course kicking off tomorrow in Derbyshire. This is followed straight away by a Tyrolean for Groups training day in North Wales. I'm looking forward to a few days of ropy fun with a good bunch of people.

My sixth and last day of LCMLA work this month. Today it was a Vertical Core Skills and SRT for Leader assessment under North Wales.
A brief departure from running a Mine Leader training into training actual miners!
This is the replica horse gin up at Magpie Mine. An 'engine' for raising ore up the nearby hauling shaft.

That's a wrap! Day 3 was mining day. A stone mine, a lead/spar mine, and the superb surface workings of Magpie Mine all ticked off today. Thanks to everyone who attended the course and Beth for the assistance, I've had a really enjoyable 3 days in your company.

I'm 2 days into a 3-day Cave & Mine Leader training course. We finished today out in the sun refining some ropework skills at the Technical Speleological Group - TSG Caving. Tomorrow is mining day and we're off to see 2 mines and play with my big box of special rocks.
