We have received the following message

I am David Dyer's son, who was a pupil at Nelson Grammar School in the late 1950s. I understand my Dad had contributed to the Nelson Grammar School news over the years.

I am sorry to share the news that David passed away recently at the age of 82, after an illness. He died peacefully at his home in Cockermouth in Cumbria where he had lived for many years with his wife Amanda. Many members of his family had been able to spend quality time with him in recent weeks. There will be no funeral, but donations in his memory to Cockermouth Music Society or Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team would be appreciated.

With kind regards

Peter Dyer

(7.30pm) Friday, February 2nd, Turf Moor.

Stuart Smith here (admin).

More details from Brian who says...

We would be delighted if you could post the details of our February gathering on the page.
We will be very happy to welcome any and all (!!) NGS Alumni who wish to join us on the evening (7.30pm) of Friday, February 2nd, in the Dr Iven Suite at Burnley FC, Turf Moor.

The suite is also the trophy room and is in the Bob Lord stand with access through the main entrance.
We have booked a buffet supper and the cost of the evening including the room hire is around £30 per person (depending on numbers to divide up the room charge).

A similar event 5 years ago was very successful, the buffet was excellent and the cash bar was very reasonably priced.

This date was chosen because several of us are still regular Burnley fans and this is the evening before the home match with Fulham

(the match could still switch to later in the weekend for TV but not the Friday because Burnley will have played away at Man City on the Wednesday evening).

Anyone who would like to attend and would like more information should contact me at [email protected]

Good afternoon all, I have received an email from Brian Duerden advertising a reunion of people who attended NGS in the 60s, to be held at the Iven suite, Burnley FC on friday evening 2nd February 2024. If you are not already aware of this, there will be a buffet meal and the cost of £30 per person. If you would like to attend or require further information you can contact Brian on [email protected] this is a follow up from a previous reunion in 2018.

I am very sad to have to report that former NGS student Glyn Dale died at the weekend while on holiday in Florida. Glynn was at NGS from 1962 to 1969 and was also a well known local sportsman, and known to many of our members.

Please welcome our two new admins Ray Ursell and Louise Aspden.

During my brief tenure in this position I was able to post several thousand photos and videos and I scanned many of the local groups in the Nelson area looking for content that might be interesting and relevant to the NGS site. We also produced a few "Where are they now" vignettes.

I hope that at least some of them were interesting for you.

Many thanks to everyone who also contributed content or comments.

I will not be disappearing off the face of the planet (yet) and will be lurking in the background to offer support to the new admins if they need it. I will however be taking a much more passive role.

I hope that you all remain healthy and happy.

Best Wishes to all
Stuart Smith

Girl middle of front row I think is Marjorie Nowell. No idea on year taken but she was born Oct 36. It might be interesting to those of the same year.

If you recently received a message from Facebook saying that you have been kicked out of the NGS Group, hopefully this email explains why.

The NGS Page (where this post exists) continues to exist and contains all of the meaningful content for NGS.

The parallel "placeholder" NGS Group (as opposed to this NGS Page) has been deleted and all members removed.

My intention was to try to migrate the data and comments from the NGS Page into that group. However, Facebook offers no mechanism to do that easily (if at all).

I have therefore abandoned that plan and have deleted the Group to avoid confusion by having two similar (but different) animals called "NGS".

If you don't understand this message.. don't worry, the NGS content lives on in the current NGS Page and there's nothing that you need to do.

Good News!

I've received one volunteer to take over as admin and ideally would like to have another volunteer so that we have TWO admins. Please let me know no later than Friday 24th November 2023 if you can help.

On a slightly morbid topic.. the reason for having at least two admins is to answer the question... "What happens if there is only ONE admin and that person dies or becomes unable to continue?".

By having TWO admins, this means that there is always a "reserve" sitting on the bench to take over in that eventuality.

As a reminder, the duties are very light so you would not be taking on a particularly difficult task.

I will be announcing the new admin(s) very soon so stay tuned.

Best Regards

Hello NGS Alumni members!

I can no longer act as Admin for the NGS site and I am looking for someone to take over that role.

Duties are very light and simply consist of being willing to post any donated content that might be sent to you acting in the Admin role.

If you can help by taking over this role please post a comment on this post or, better still contact me via FB message or email to [email protected]

Please reply within the next 7 days and no later than Friday 24th November 2023 so that I can set you up as administrator.

If no one volunteers by that time I will disconnect from the role and this page will become an unadministered "zombie" Page and may even be completely deleted. I don't know what Facebook does with a Page that has no Admin associated with it. FB may even delete the entire site.

Please help if you can.

Best Regards - Stuart (admin)

P.S. another part of the admin role is to ensure that all comments and posts follow the rules of basic decency. To date, this has never been an issue and everyone behaves like intelligent respectful people. As an admin you can step in and bring a rapid end to abusive comments if ever they should surface - remedies include banning a user. I very much doubt that this will be an issue for the current NGS alumni members.
