Mandatory MOT testing is to be reintroduced from 1 August 2020 as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted, Roads minister Baroness Vere has announced today (29 June 2020).
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, drivers were granted a 6-month exemption from MOT testing in March to help slow the spread of the virus. However, as restrictions are eased when safe to do so, all drivers whose car, motorcycle or van is due for an MOT test from 1 August will be required to get a test certificate to continue driving their vehicle.
MOT tests are important for road safety and ensure that vehicle parts, including tyres, seatbelts, brakes, lights and exhausts, are in proper working order.
Drivers with an MOT due date before 1 August will still receive a 6-month exemption from testing. However, all vehicles must continue to be properly maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition, and people are able to voluntarily get their MOT sooner should they wish, even if they are exempt from the legal requirement. Motorists can be prosecuted for driving an unsafe vehicle.
Last week the DVSA, cancelled thousands of practical driving tests.
Notified by email of the cancellation, some customers have been left confused by how the priority booking will work when tests become available...
Here is a message from Chief Executive Kayleigh Woodfield of the Driving Instructors Association (DIA), to give you an understanding of what the DVSA are doing and how the temporary new system will work.
For any more information, or if your theory certificate is due to expire soon, you should contact DVSA Customer Support on 0300 200 1122 to discuss your options.

*When can we resume driving tuition*
The following passage is an email update from the DVSA regarding driving tuition...
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Driving instruction and driving tests
Other than emergency training and tests for critical workers, driving instruction and driving tests have not yet been able to restart because the risk of transmission of the virus in vehicles is higher.
In his statement on 10 June, the Prime Minister reiterated that the government will remain cautious and measure the effect of the changes it makes. The Prime Minister explained this means moving slower than weβd have liked in some areas.
Driving instruction and tests will only restart when the government is confident that the assessment of risk warrants it, subject to the 5 tests and further detailed scientific advice.
In the meantime, I want to re-emphasise that you should continue to limit driving lessons to critical workers who are preparing for an emergency driving test.
Once again, I would like to thank those of you who have been able to offer driving lessons to critical workers during these unprecedented times.
We will, of course, share more information with you as soon as itβs available β including the dates that driving instruction and driving tests can restart."
*So unfortunately we have to wait until we receive further guidance from our governing body (DVSA), before we can resume our in car training. Please keep an eye on our page for further updates!
