Is the music tempo too high to learn the drum groove? Are the beats per minute too fast? Try using the Chrome browser extension Global Speed. You can slow down Spotify audio when it plays in a web page at https://open.spotify.com/. Click on the browser icon and select a lower speed. Learning drum beats is a cognitive process so you need time to think what to do with your limbs when learning new beats.

Do you know when to hit the next note on your drums? Can you read music? Can you count the number of tails on notes and rests? Many notes and rests have a stem and tail. The number of tails indicates the duration of the note and when to hit the next note. In 4/4 time there are four quarter beats in the bar which may be divided and counted as 1e&a-2e&a-3e&a-4e&a. Crochets have no tail and are four sixteenths long (1/4 notes). Quavers have two tails and are two sixteenths long (1/8 notes). Semiquavers have two tails and are one sixteenth long (1/16 notes). Try playing the two examples below. Thump the bass drum on 1 2 3 4. (The notes are red and the rests are blue.)

Can you play paradiddle grooves on the drums with your feet as well as your hands? A forward paradiddle is played with RLRR LRLL. Start by hitting the ride cymbal with your right stick and the snare with your left. This may be vocalised as 'boom-crack-tick-tick' and 'crack-tick-crack-crack'. Then try thumping the bass drum with your right foot and the snare drum with your left hand vocalised as 'boom-crack-boom-boom' and 'crack-boom-crack-crack'. Move on to the inward and reverse paradiddles if you fancy a challenge.

Can you play a 16s drum beat? Have you tried hitting the hihat with two hands instead of one? Try playing the sixteens drum beat to 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' by U2. Play semiquaver 'apple crumbles' on the hihat with both sticks. Hit the snare with the right stick on beats two and four. Keep time with the bass drum. This may be vocalised as 'boomer-crumble-thwacker-crumble'. Include a flourish by playing a partial semiquaver on the snare which is 'apple' or 'crumble'.

Can you play 'apple crumble' semiquavers with your foot? Do you like the great Jon Bonham of Led Zeppelin? Play quavers on the hihat with a count of 1&2& then try adding a semiquaver 'apple crumble' on the bass drum with a count of 1e&a2 &. The beat may be vocalised as 'bubba-bubba-crack-tick'. If you can also add a 'black berry' partial semiquaver you're as good as Jon Bonham (almost). Don't cheat by using a double bass drum pedal or by adding echo to your audio mix.
