FIVE LITTLE SPECKLED FROGS

A firm favourite song amongst our Toddler room is 5 little speckled frogs.

To expand on this interest and develop play further, our practitioners froze 5 frogs in a tub of water and added plants and greenery for the children to explore.

The children tried lots of different ways to free the frogs and discussed how the ice felt, using descriptive language such as wet, cold, and frozen. This opened opportunity to extend the children’s vocabulary and introduce them to new words as well as number names.

Nursery rhymes are an essential part of early education and support early language skills, build confidence and build on skills required later for reading and writing

COLOUR MIXING

We have been busy creating our very own masterpieces, looking at the process and not just the end result.

Using paints of the children’s choosing, they mixed them together to see what happened when the colours mixed. After the children had created their new colours, they used paint brushes to cover one side of paper before folding it over and pressing down to rub over it.

They then proudly peeled back the paper to reveal the pattern they had created, which was the same of both sides!

Allowing children the chance to explore their own ideas and find new ways of doing things, ignites their curiosity, allows them to feel a sense of pride and enables all three of the characteristics of effective learning.

SCISSORS

This week in Rising 3’s we have been practicing our scissor safety, using soft media such as spaghetti to carefully cut up using the scissors.

The children listened carefully whilst we discussed how to use the scissors safely and carefully.

Use of scissors is great for bilateral coordination, hand eye co-ordination and building on a child’s fine motor skills.

Activities such as this are great for promoting independence, which is one of the core values making up our ethos.

THIS IS ME

In Rising 3`s we have been taking a closer look at ourselves. Together we have looked in the mirrors and discussed what we look like and described our features using lovely language like “I have blue eyes and brown hair, What colour do you have ?”

We then used paints to create paintings of ourselves using the brushes with control to create shapes, like circles to represent the face and eyes.

This activity promotes communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, understanding of the world and fine motor skills.

TREES

Our Preschool Academy children have recently shown an increasing interest in their environment, to support this we have been looking at what grows around us including the tress around our wonderful setting

We all explored what lives in a tree and what can be made from the wood. They shared that bugs live under the tree stumps in the garden and that birds make nests in a tree to lay their eggs and keep their babies safe. During our key worker time the children have been using descriptive language and extended sentences to explain all of the above.

In Preschool Academy we revisited phonics learning with a twist to reinforce what the children have all recently learnt.

To do this we used playdough and fine motor skills to roll, pinch, squeeze and copy the letters and numbers into, this also supported the children in their understanding and following of simple instructions.

While they are using fine motor skills to manipulate the playdough they are building and developing muscles in their hands ready for writing skills for big school, ensuring they are ready to start on their new journey after the summer.

Last week on Nantwich Show day we created show themed activities across the Nursery.

In our Baby room we created a sand and shaving foam mixture for the babies to explore!

We added different types of vehicles, rolling them back and forth through the mixture to create track marks!

The babies mirrored these actions whilst feeling the mixture with their hands, offering a lovely sensory experience as well as mark making, promoting physical development as well as literacy development.

We also looked at and spoke about the different types of vehicles and talking about the different roles they play in society, promoting our understanding of the world.

LET’S INVESTIGATE

The children in our Toddler room have had the opportunity to engage in our Discovery boxes activity.

The activity consists of 4 boxes made up of gloop with wooden tools, cotton wool balls with spoons, bark and leaves with insects and flavoured tea bags and teacups. They really enjoyed moving from box to box exploring all the different textures while using a variety of words such as cup, squeeze, and ladybird.

This activity offers the children to be curious about the objects on offer to promotes their learning through investigation skills, and also promotes language development using single words and simple sentences as well as introducing lots of new descriptive words that the children can add to their vocabulary.

Throughout the summer Roundabouts Nantwich has been taking part in the Playmakers World Cup, led by the fantastic Mr Ross and competing against other local nurseries.

The children were assigned different teams within the Playmakers World Cup and our Belgium playing team were very excited to be runners up this year, bringing home their second place runner up trophy!

As a special thanks to Mr Ross for all the fun, excitement and learning, the children presented Mr Ross with a special gift.

What a very happy and proud experience for the children that also promotes team work and shows working hard can bring you great joy and great accomplishments.
